I didn't make the thread to discuss Minecraft specifically, more just how "It is a video game" is a rare and high compliment these days. The vast majority are horrible Frankenstein monsters made of stitched together movies with the odd bit of video game glued on.
I have the same problem with Minecraft as I do with Skyrim. I enjoy it right up until I find a mod issue that I can't fix. Then I stop playing and don't go back.

It was a let down. /v/ didn't like where it was headed and dropped it after alpha. It wasn't hatred at that time, just disappoinment. Hatred only started when Notch sold-out to MS. The "new" biome generator they've implemented fuck knows when. I liked flying islands and steep mountains that were possible in the original biome generator. Now you can only get such beatiful landscapes with mods.

Oh, that's gay. Getting lost in mines was really cool in Minecraft when I used to play. Having a shaft open up into a cave system was exciting because going in would mean a good chance of good minerals, but also getting lost. Tracking your progress sounds like an awesome way to kill fun.
Also, this might be a totally buzzkilling question, but I'm really curious. Why do so many people watch Minecraft let's plays? My younger brother does and I don't get it.
My favourite are servers that have been running for more than two years and are mostly deserted.

I played minecraft last time in april I think and have never really grown to hate it, but I don't understand watching lets plays of it.
Yahtzee and Gabes drown out featured minecraft twice, but that's mostly a podcast, an hour each time.

This is the only point I've really heard that I completely agree with when people say Minecraft got shitty because of development. The terrain change was a definite downgrade and really ruined a huge amount of the fun of the game. I remember the first few hours whenever I would play way back when were spent just looking for the perfect spot to build my little house, just finding the most unique and inspiring piece of terrain. Now it's just some hills and boring garbage.

Ars magica, the first one.
It relied heavily on exploration, which was one of my favorite things about minecraft, and the spells were fun to use. I felt it was enhanced by the mo creatures mod since it has wyverns and flying horses you can ride.

actually since 99% of xray mods do NOT hide lava blocks by default, if you make an underground base inside a huge ass lava pool (or just make an artificial lava pool around it after) and put some random empty chests on the surface to trick radarfags you are quite secure
