Don't play your main, play someone else to learn. A lot of people say to play your main while trying to learn but all that did for me was fuck me up in both games.
Just pick up a new character and work on l cancels. After that, shffl. Those are the primary things you need to learn, you don't need wavedashing when you start out, it will only hurt you at first. When you start to apply shffling and start to combo, but need to reach someone faster, then you start wavedashing. L cancelling is much more important.

That's all up to you. I think Sheik is better to learn than Marth for new players. It teaches you tech chasing, pretty easy combos, and you won't rely a ton on smash attacks. Ultimately you play who you find to be the most fun.
However for l cancelling, use Links Dair. Or just Ganondorf. Just to get a feel. When you have that down then you can pick whoever feels the best to you. Also, l cancelling has different timings based on if you hit someone or not, that includes when you hit their shield. So do it a bit later when you hit someone. I think you're supposed to hit it 7 frames or so before hitting the ground. If you have your shield up when you hit the ground, you're holding it too long. You don't need to completely press the triggers to do it.
