Whether or not the pawn's AI is good depends on several factors:
>The two types of inclinations you give them.
>Their class.
>How you yourself play.
Pawns tend to copy what you do, so if you play as an aggressive melee character, consider making your pawn one, too. If you're playing as a caster, make sure your pawn is one as well. IIRC, they learn much faster if they share the same class as you, so consider changing your class to theirs temporarily.
If you want to change inclinations, then purchase some inclination elixirs from the man in yellow garb in that little wooden fortress area right outside of the fishing town. (I forgot its name.) They cost Rift Crystals, not gold, so be sure to remember that. There's one elixir that completely erases your pawns inclinations, basically making them neutral once again. The other elixirs give them a huge boost towards a certain inclination, adjusting their behavior.
Some inclinations are better for certain classes, and some inclinations are better off ignored altogether for many reasons. (I can go in-depth if you want.) Generally, these inclinations are good for pawns:
>Scather - Makes the pawn target the strongest enemies first.
>Mitigator - Makes the pawn target the weakest enemies first.
>Challenger - Makes the pawn target enemies using ranged weapons/magic.
>Utilitarian - Makes the pawn more inclined to use special strategies such as throwing items at enemies, utilizing skills that require more than one teammate (Such as the warrior skill that hoists an ally up into the air.), and also make them want to use curatives that restore HP for the entire group.
>Pioneer - Makes your pawn "fond of exploring", meaning that they will walk ahead of you rather than behind you.
All those inclinations I listed are good, but some classes prefer a certain combination. (At least, depending on how you want your pawn to act.) Inclinations you should avoid will be in the nest post.

You can give one of your pawns a special shawl from the bald, rich man in Gransys and then give them this inclination. The effects of their curatives will be increased, and they will often use them as long as they have a healthy stash in their inventory. I'd only really give this inclination to a dedicated healer pawn, but as a secondary, not a primary, inclination.
Oh, and another thing I forgot to mention: Your pawn has a primary and secondary inclinations. The primary one is the way they will usually approach situations with, but the secondary inclination affects behavior, too.
Bestiary knowledge also determines how effective your pawn will be against certain enemies. Try doing everything you can to kill an enemy. That's how pawns learn to effectively deal with them in many situations.

How do you like to play? Fighter seems vanilla, but it's a pretty good mix of offense + defense, strider is fun if you want fast knife-play, bows, and being able to climb on enemies faster than any other class. Mage is shit and should only be used by pawns. If you want a magic class, get to Gransys (The first large city in the game.) and become a Sorcerer. They're the real magic-slinging class. They start off with the same offensive spells as Mages, but after some vocation leveling, they will get their own offensive spells.

Fighter/Strider/Mage are all fine end game. Mage doesn't get the catastrophe level spells, but due to what might be a bug/design oversight, the highest DPS Mage/Wizard tend to do is with a basic holy enchant anyways.
The Hybrid classes can do some fairly insane shit, but it's more that they can be OP than the other classes underpowered, and in Magick Archer's case, their OP shit kinda relies on a small enclosed space to function really well.
