I had recently gotten a membership for the first time and at some point I bought some Elite black armor or whatever it is that looked dope as hell and was as good as rune for almost the same price. I guess someone thought I was filthy rich or something because one day I tried logging on and my password didn't work, so I reset it. When I got on my money and some more valuable items were gone, but the damage wasn't too bad. I only lost maybe 300k

I did almost every quest together with this one guy I met right out the gates in Lumbridge, including the dragon quest which is supposed to be a one man fight, but we managed to get into the chamber together and take turns tanking it.

I used to sell those fire kits for 1K. You got a free fire kit at the beginning of the game and people would just sell them at the store or drop the item because they thought it was useless. By the time you need the fire kit, you'll have a fair amount of money but not enough experience to know where to get a fire kit or you'll have forgotten about it. I would buy them at the store for 1gp and sell them for 1K at locations where fire was required.
I used to sell cakes and other things that are required for quests. Very easy way to make money.

Had a friend for a month who were BFFs, turns out he was using me to scout for resources in late-game. He gangraped the shit out of me with his buddies.
But the difference is: He told me things about himself. Namely he was head of an alliance and his birthdate.
So I did a password reset on his account. Then I logged on, disbanded any protection he had, fired every nuke (He had like 4000 nukes) at every person who attacked me, and then I changed his Alliance's message to "THE ONLY THING WE HATE MORE THAN JEWS ARE *NIGGERS*". Then I changed his password and recovery email so his friends couldn't ever fix this. They would have to form a new alliance to get rid of it.
I was close to doing the same thing with his contact email. He left it in his account and some of his PMs outright stated what the password was. I felt I had done enough.

That's what happened really, you learned about the game so now you feel obligated to be good at it. For instance, I beat Fallout 1 while playing it blind, did a lot of dumb shit. After beating it once I felt the urge to use my knowledge from the previous one to abuse in the next, and the next, and so on. Optimization just seems to be part of the learning process whether or not we find it fun. A lot of the fond memories people have about MMOs are back when they were clueless about them. That's just my take on it though.

I think MMOs have encouraged this, though. They are no longer the fun sandboxes-with-combat that they were when we were kids and had that time.
Now every MMO just wants to be WoW and lead people around a theme park. So the grinding is just part of going around that theme park and exploring the content. Don't want to grind? Tough, guess you won't see the rest of that themepark.
The days of just picking a direction and wandering off in that direction until you found something cool are over.
The days of going to a town that you aren't even supposed to be in and chatting with people as they do things are over.
I feel every MMO now has made moves to insulate the player. To make the outside world less of a distraction from grinding or talking with your friends/guild mates. Post-WoW seems to be the era where no one wants the massively multiplayer in the MMO anymore.

My friend convinced me to try something similar. He had a dragon spear he wanted to sell, so he told me to go down one end of the bank and say I was buying a d spear for 650k, while he stood at the other end and tried to sell his spear for 600k. He thought he'd be able to sell really fast that way as someone would try and turn a quick profit selling the spear back to me.
