If Frontier was my first Rune Factory, is it worth it to go back and play the older ones for the DS?
Or should I just skip those and play RF4?

Personally loved 1, but if you're turned off by less mechanics and such, don't bother and just play 4.
Frontier was amazing. Really want to play it again.

Runeys just ruined the game. I still cleared it, but the daily Runey distribution just added a layer of irritating busywork that dragged the whole thing down. And it takes skill to make an outstandingly irritating busywork mechanic in a franchise that is 80% repetitive busywork.
Frontier is the best one, so you'll have to set your expectations accordingly.

I agree. The runeys are such a horrible thing in such a great game.
I like to linger in the implication that the town in RN1 is likely going to get razed to the ground at some point.
I mean, the whatever empire's invasion only failed because there happened to be an unexplained Dragon-God-Beating super fighter farmer dude hanging around, plus a Dragon God that he had made his bitch. At some point someones gonna go "Hey, the kid moved and the dragon fucked off. Wanna go pick up our tanks and murder everyone around for revenge?"

I'm still miffled that they demonstrated they could make a fun main character with an actual personality in Oceans, and then went right the fuck back to Generic Polite Nice Guy. Azel being a teasing asshat was actually endearing, everyone else feels so fucking vanilla.
It carried across franchises too. I'm playing that Magna game, and the main character is just the exact same dull-ass shit, on top of the whole thing being unbearably dull.

RF5 was greenlit way back before the US release of RF4, but first Never Land went bankrupt and then the remainder of the RF team who now work at Marvelous did Lord of Magna, so we don't really know what happened to RF5
The producer of the series also said recently there's a bunch of projects he's producing also that haven't been properly revealed yet, so who knows what'll come this year
