He's similar to the carbons, but bred for combat. Which is why he's so versatile and able to switch weapons so freely.

The game says flatout he's a purifier unit. So he's a robot. Data says his kind of robot had the ability to revert into a baby to avoid catastrophic damage... ... so maybe he did actually grow up.
Or maybe it was a mistranslation and he downloaded into a freshly hatched carbon body... there was an allusion on the Devblog that Trigger;s old body could be found and fought. And that didn't jive with Data's explanation.

Capcom kind of screwed up the localization out of fear of losing the brand recognition.
When Trigger was brought home, Roll named him "Rock".
They introduced the concept of "Megaman" units in ZX, so the plot twist at the end of Legends 1 was suppose to be that Rock was actually a "Megaman/Rockman" unit (like Juno, who referred to himself as Megaman Juno) in his past life, and not a carbon/human.
Instead we got Megaman Volnutt is actually Megaman Trigger, and for some reason there's a Megaman Juno too.

how I think about it, by ZX, humans usually have artificial enhancements and reploids were given arbitrary lifespans and are almost biomechanical at this point. The only way you can tell a human and humanoid reploid apart is by the triangle on their forehead.
I can't remember if they can interbreed but I like to think that Carbons are the end result of reploids thousands of years later.
It's relatively easy for a carbon to just change bodyparts too, Megaman isn't the only one.

I just want to know how the story finishes, goddamnit. Trigger is stuck on the moon and Roll and Tron can't build a spaceship to rescue him because they are too busy having hate sex at every time they disagree with the schematics, which is like every odd minute.
