Anon, the risk of bricking is almost non-existent for O3DS and 2DS, provided you're capable of following basic instructions. If you don't do it before Monday, Nintendo will probably block browserhax and you'll miss out on the entire 3DS library for free. But yeah, you'd need an SD card reader. It's definitely worth it, though, trust me.

If yokai watch and pokemon are on there, it definitely should be, given it's basically the same but with vastly better core mechanics.

They're very different games, the fanbase is divided. The further you go, the further it strays from the "core" MH experience. But they're all exceptional action games. 4U is my personal preference of the two on 3DS.
MHX is amazing, but strays SUPER far from the formula, to good and bad effect. Look forward to it if it ever gets announced for a western release.

Currently 4U has the most content. 4U and X have online multiplayer though so you could always play with anons here or just randoms.
In terms of general differences though, 3U is local only, has all the 3rd gen monsters (some of the best in the series), has a unique water mechanic where you can go in water and completely changes some things and loads of great quests although enemies are spongy so soloing the multiplayer would get tedious.
4U added two more weapons, a height system where you can climb and do leaping attacks, tons of new monsters and most 1st and 2nd gen stuff (little 3rd gen though), and has a pretty good tutorial.
X only has a couple new monsters but has the most old ones and is basically an anniversary collection. Also has styles and you can play as the cats. Some people are holding off though becomes capcom almost always releases an ultimate edition a year later that's the exact same game but with better balance, G rank (hard mode more or less) and some more monsters.
An important to note is each monster hunter is mostly an improvement over the last so going backwards can be hard. It'd be worth it to just do the single player of 3U and then go to 4U.
