it's pretty much the same mechanics wise, but more refined. Felt like there was more emphasis on exploration and there's more tombs (although they are still optional) and the levels are a lot less linear. The combat isn't as annoying either because there's a lot less of those waves following waves types of encounters.
It's not a huge step up, but it's an improvement.

The problem is that it's too easy. It reminds me of AssCreed, even though there's a cool bunch of areas you can explore, everything is marked on your map and theres tons of audio and visual clues to let you know if you are near something important. So sometimes, exploration can feel like a checklist rather than something that you do at your own pace.
Beyond that, it's a fine adventure game. I have given up hope on a game like the classic TR's, and apart from Uncharted which is a Sony exclusive there is nothing quite like this.

I played the 2013 game, it was fun but it isn't really anything like the originals. The platforming is designed so that laura is like magnetic where she like clings to ledges and walls, etc so there is some slack with how precise you have to be. I like both the originals and the new game, just different pieces of delicious pie.
I looked at about 15 different video reviews of RotTR and it looks like the 2013 game just in a much better environment with more of all the good stuff.
I don't think my shitty laptop can play this game, so I'll probably just pick it up during the summer sale when it may have some type of discount. If I knew I could play it for sure I would even pre-order it.

I liked tomb raider reboot because I found the gameplay enjoyable and compelling. I absolutely agree with you about the dissonance between cutscene lara and gameplay lara, because you really are just the fucking embodiment of murder in that game. They clearly tried to play to the middle and go with what was established and safe, but without being exploitative, so we ended up with a fairly mediocre product. What would have been cool is if, as you keep killing more and more dudes, a subgroup of islanders starts popping up worshiping you as a "goddess of death" who is coming to free them from the mortal world filled with pain and broken tree limbs that get driven through your torso.

I'm looking forward to the new one as well. I think the generic TPS shooter of the first one really sucked ass, and I think the survival aspects and the stealth aspects are going to be enhanced more and it will lead to a better more clear narrative and gameplay.
