The gameplay is the best in the series and some of the best third person shooting in any game.
The story is absolutely forgettable and a completely unnecessary addition to Max's tale. It should have ended at 2 or at the very least they should have got Sam Lake to write it.

IT'S PAYNE
One of the best third person shooters of all time, the reason people don't like it is because it feels really out of place compared to Max Payne 1 and 2.
Granted, I kind of like that about it, to be frank. It's like if you plucked Max from his shooters and threw him into a different, more modern shooter. Which is sort of what happens in story, too. Max is thrown into a country and situation that he has no hope of understanding where he doesn't even speak the language, so it's natural that he feels clumsy there. That's how I feel, anyway.
You should play it, though. The core gameplay is probably one of my favorite shooters of all time.

The soundtrack is wonderful. That credits song Tears by HEALTH hit me like a ton of bricks. A good addition to the series

I thought the writing was pretty good. A lot of games I've seen have cheesy as fuck dialogue (Bioware mostly) but in MP every sentence feels like it was written for a purpose - and written by a genuinely good author.

The most memorable moment of the game for me was when the office is burning and you walk across a plank over the inferno and you CANNOT FALL. Whatever button you press max will walk along the plank. It pretends you're controlling the character but you're not really and there are other places like this. That and chest high wall shooting make it modern in all the wrong ways.
