With F2P mechanics, it's all about making your game either incredibly easy, or P2W. Both of those attract whales.
With hats, they added whales and kikes to an existing game, with dramatic results. They turned the game into a complete joke. Long gone were the days where you could co-ordinate your team on any level.

Half-Life 3 obviously wasn't going to happen, anyway. it SURPASSED the Duke Nukem line and left it in the dust. If Valve ever gets the gumption to actually do anything it'll be another Left4Dead (lazy braindead shootan), Team Fortress 3 (now on Source 2, a new game with new hats to buy!) or dota3 (autistic fanbase won't quite dota2 and it'll flop, flop like a modern Blizzard game)

You do realize DNF was only really in development for one or two years at most, right? When it actually entered serious development (after literally being shuffled around between companies for a decade), it was by a team that didn't realize how miserable a state it was in, and before they could get out of it they were stuck in a contract to produce a piece of shit. Don't act like DNF was a labor of love that the original team spent over a decade producing and just couldn't "live up to the hype", because that couldn't be more wrong.
