Shit gameplay is solved in overclocked and it adds epilogue that ranges from improving the worst storyline to a decent one to making good ones even better.
So it is now matter of preference do you want post apocalyptic struggle to save your skin and maybe some people you care about (1) or Eva with social links and cute hats (2).

No, there is absolutely no reason to grind in this game except for maybe 1 or 2 fights near the endgame just to make things a bit easier for yourself, but EVEN then it's not a necessity.
Optional superboss is another story.

I found some of the escort quests ridiculously hard without grinding. I think I gave up on like day 2 or 3 with the singer on stage. Maybe I just need to git gud.
