Demon souls is faster than Dark Souls 2 and arguably Dark Souls.
The gameplay is like Dark Souls minus a few nice additions like jumping and plunge attacks.
But the bosses and atmosphere of Demons stands apart from the Souls series. Hopelessness is the name of DeS middle name which also lets it stand apart from Bloodborne too.
Bloodborne meanwhile has some of the best meaty combat of an arpg and is accented by some spectacular boss themes and fights.
Really you should just play the entire series. Every game offers a fresh atmosphere and take on the standard gameplay.

I'm not sure yet. The vermin seem to be similar to blood dregs in that only select people could see them. It's possible that the maggots and especially the one that grows out of the bloodstarvened beasts body are adult vermin.

Possibly. They are both hunters and as church members of high standing (which they surely should've been given their relationship to the church and Laurence and Wilhelm). The curse was laid on hunters. And the orphan's existence and suffering is apparently a troubling thing to Gherman since he sleeps easier when the Hunter's Nightmare is ended.

You are put on the hunt through the blood transfusion, and you have to find and kill the moon presence, aka paleblood, to transcend it and become a great one yourself. You could very well be a willing patient of the church trying to contact the great ones, much like the ones on the research hall; with the Yarnham sunrise ending being you backing out of that decision and the other two endings you trying to ascend.

Paleblood is only ever referenced in the game as the paleblood sky of the red moon and as a "name" for the nameless moon presence
