Are we ignoring that the PS3 turned out to be the best console of its generation? Or are we gonna take liberties with history for a bit of shitposting?

Rift is not a console. It's a $600 piece of headgear that requires you to have an at least $800 PC for it to even run properly. This shit is gonna flop for YEARS. If it ever takes off at all considering phone apps are being made as we speak that, when combined with a piece of cardboard, turn your phone into a 3D headset.
>>

Is the PS VR a standalone product or a peripheral for the PS4? If it's the latter I'd anticipate them selling it for less than the price of the console since as it is they already get most of their profit from game sales and PS+

There will be VR exclusive games though right? So as time goes on, the tech becomes cheaper and the incentive to get one increases. I don't think a high price point is going to kill Oculus or VR in general. It will just prevent it from becoming mainstream for a while.

You mis-read. It'll be on TOP of the price of the external processing unit. PSVR itself will cost like $300-$500, then you'll also have to buy the processing unit that'll be another $300-$500.

VR doesn't work if the games are running at 10-30fps. They need at LEAST solid 60.

Unit is part of the package because it's useless without the headset. And it won't cost more than a PS4 did at launch. Why? Because Sony isn't fucking stupid. No one will buy a $600 peripheral. So it'll be $400. Especially if the processing unit is just a slimmed down PS4. Like a PS4 without the 500GB HDD, bluray drive, and a minimized shell with a built in PS Move camera. We already know that the PSVR head tracking is done via the lights on the headset. So it won't even have the complicated shit the Rift uses for head tracking. It'll just be a 1080p phone screen with lights on the shell and audio capabilities.
>>
>>322993337
If it's $400 it's going to be shit. End of story. You aren't getting an external processing unit AND a VR headset for under $500 unless it's complete garbage.

Just like the PS4, it's cheap but shit. The only difference here is that the PSVR won't have any exclusives to save it, because all the cool exclusives will be on PC along with the exclusive porn.

Don't forget, for a standard consumer they'll have to upgrade their pc if they want high quality graphics/resolution, which is around 900.

Total price comes to 1400, not to mention it doesn't come with the touch. The vive will at least come with something similar to the touch.

At this point the only hope for consumer VR is sony's VR thing (most standard/casual games already own a ps4), and the vive.

Don't underestimate Facebook and Oculus. They're building a platform that they want to dominate in many fields. They have a huge head start over everyone thanks to their deep pockets and their partnership with the biggest consumer electronics brand in the world, Samsung. Right now the only company that can compete toe to toe with them is Microsoft and maybe Apple although they're very behind.
>>
$599, which instantly translates into six hundred and some change for tax and content.

It's ushering in the golden age of VR, but the Rift itself will never really succeed. It's too expensive for casuals and the Vive is stealing the hardcore market.
>>
>>322994112
Gear VR and all the integration with Galaxy smartphones is designed by Oculus. The difference is that it's using Samsung's phone and the unit itself is manufactured by them.
>>
>>322991852
the price point will hurt oculus but won't kill them ,that is taking it too far in my opinion and yes there is exclusive "content"(that eve game and some tech demo thing) but the price point is just too much to for the mainstream consumer too ignore and for the enthusiast it seems like a ridiculous price for something that will be outdated in literally 6 or less months .

It just does not seem like a good investment

and yes I am aware everything becomes outdated within 24 months but this is different , this is trying to open up a market at a dumb price point which will turn off the people facebook cares about , the mainstream consumers.
>>
>>322994045
But Sony is competing with them, and HTC/Valve teamed up to compete with them too. You're saying that the only thing that can happen doesn't include things already happening.

>>
>>322993525

Obviously Sony will be subsidising the cost.

Oculus are only able to sell at cost.
>>
>>322989969
Rift is in an awkward "too expensive for mainstream and too inferior to more hardcore alternatives" spot right now, literally the only thing keeping it afloat is decent PR but if Vive shows up with an aggressive price then it's pretty much the end.
>>
>>322993525

>AND a VR headset for under $500 unless it's complete garbage

A large portion of a VR headsets cost is probably the head tracking tech. The screen is just a partitioned cell phone screen. Guess what? The PSVR gets around that cost by using the PS Move camera. Sony stated this from the beginning. It uses light bars on the headset to judge where the headset is and where it is looking. So most of the cost will go into the external assist to make sure it reads those lights as fast as fucking possible while adding power to the PS4.

Imagine a minimized PS4 that has none of the PSN bullshit or RAM partitions or any of that crap. Every ounce of it dedicated to assisting the PS4 with 60fps VR. It's easily possible and a PS4 is already only $350. Now take the 500GB HDD and bluray drive out. Add a Move camera. I'd guess that'd be about a $250 thing. Now add a $150 headset that's a phone screen with lights on it. Boom. $400.

>because all the cool exclusives will be on PC

If you think enough people are going to buy a $600 Rift to make VR-only games feasible, then you are on some powerful drugs. All you guys will get is VR ports of old shit.

Facebook has the connections. It's a giant in the technology space. Sony is just another struggling Japanese company that is restructuring from consumer electronics to semiconductor manufacturing. They hold no power. They'll never be able to compete with any of the major silicon valley companies when it comes to designing experiences and software for the industry, for homes and mobile. Samsung, Facebook and Oculus have such a huge fucking edge over HTC and Sony when it comes to engineering, resources and overall importance in technology.

This is well beyond the diminishing returns critical point and they got fucked by the price of all this.

I'm saying that Sony isn't competing with Oculus. They're competing against themself.

Sony is a company that fights itself. Sony is a company that pits it's own divisions against each other. Sony is a company in transition from consumer electronics to semiconductor manufacturer meaning it's creating a greater dependency on other companies to succeed rather than itself because they lack the resources to make products now. Sony of 1996 is not the Sony of 2004+.

No, that's not a cost. It didn't have to be like this.

Custom-ordering parts is still far more expensive than repurposing readily available parts like HTC is reportedly doing.
And HTC is a company from the world capital of slave labor and they have a lot of experience designing phones which share a lot of tech with VR, I will be very surprised if Vive is costs more than a Rift + touch controllers.
>>
>>322996764
Yeah, obviously Oculus is making some stupid decisions, and the Vive is making better ones, apart from the name, but the fabric probably doesn't cost that much to produce either and comfort is something that actually matters on the headset.
>>
>>322995549
Another blind without glasses anon here, what are htc putting in vive so I can actually use it?
>>
>>322997017
The whole face area is modular, so you just swap out the padding, allowing there to be enough room for your glasses in front of your face, and leave the padding out in places where it would squash your glasses into you uncomfortably. You might be able to jury right the Oculus this way too, but the HTC guys have specifically cited this as a feature, and Palmer hasn't.
>>
I don't get why it's so expensive, as a standalone company I would understand the price but Facebook bought them, how can Facebook think it's okay for them as big as they are to charge so much for this product?

Occulus Rift fucked up with the branding with CV1. PC Rift don't need to be mass marketable, that's fine because you can make money on luxury . The Rift target should be with developers, enterprises, public sectors, Ethutasist, and shit.
