Except the undead curse and Gwyn keeping things fucked for everyone and Artorias trying to erradicate the corruption and getting corrupted. Add to that the fact that there are NPcs who aren't trying to kill you and send you on a quest to free the land.
That theory only works if you only played 5 minutes of the game (even then, you'd have met Oscar by that point), fucking dumbass.

There's a cliff side behind the bonfire that's connected to an aqueduct. That's where you'll want to go.

Look around a bit. You should see some stairs going up the side of a hill/mountain. It's a bit off to the side. Just take your time, head up them, and you'll have an easier time than beforeor run past the skelies first thing and get the glorious Zweihander
