Snake couldn't use regular weapons like machine guns (not from the solid 4 era anyway) against even their grunts because technology and armor have vastly improved over the years between the two games, MAYBE tranquilizers would work but that's not a full proof plan. So its mostly no he couldn't take on those bosses.

So the metal gear timeline has advance so far that armor can't pierce their armor but no made any armor pierce rounds that can? What about some thing like Fortune's Rail Gun? Old Snake took down a shit ton of Gekkos with it. Wouldn't that be able to take out the grunts pretty easily?

Even gekkos were primitive compared to the current games UG's
For instance, The metal gear RAY in the first mission was a lot faster, stronger and reacted quicker due to its advanced ai, the gekkos did as well because in solid 4 they were slower but still did massive damage.
