10. Cid. Forced to lead the party during part of the Huge Materia quest until you get Cloud back during the Mideel events.
I think that's just about all the forced party member segments. You also have to use Cait Sith and Vincent during the split path portion of the Northern Crater if you want to duplicate stuff like the Mystile and the Counter materia, but that's completely optional.

That's funny, because in a recent run, I ended up starting my endgame materia grind with Cloud, Yuffie, and Cid in the Northern crater all at around level 40, and when I finished, despite having not switched out for any other party members, everyone was level 99. Now how do you think that happened?
The only time a party member won't level up in accordance with the formula that keeps everyone's levels within a certain number of the active party's average level is if they're dead.

Oh that's right. Forgot about that one. But you don't have to fight any battles with her in your party at that point. The most you'll have is a few randoms on your way through the Whirlwind Maze, which you can run from, since there's no possibility of a surrounded attack enemy formation in the Whirlwind Maze. That part is also very late into the Whirlwind Maze, and way after the fight with the Jenova tentacle that uses the water attacks which that guy was talking about. I actually can't recall if you fight the third Jenova tentacle before or after that point, but it doesn't matter because it's the easiest of the three Jenova tentacle fights.

The only fight she is forced into is Jenova Death at the crater. Also its attacks are fire based. And I refuse to believe that she was that low in comparison to the rest of the party.

I've leveled all my characters to 99 just by using three main members of my active party in both the PS1 and Steam versions.
The AVALANCHE people dying hit me harder as a kid because I didn't know they'd die. As for Dyne, he was a selfish crazy murderer and the best thing for Marlene was for him to die. I never used Aeris in my party when I first played because I figured I wouldn't bother building up a walking corpse. I just finished a replay for the first time in 10 years and I gotta say people who don't use Aeris are missing out, she's a pretty cool character.
