I am a very big fan of them videogames, yes.
That said, the word gamer has been corrupted by the narrative and became one of those words or expressions you can never quite say without a little sting in the back of your head because it conjures a lot of technically unrelated but annoying imagery.

Pretty much this. If someone asks me out of the blue if I play video games, I probably already know them well enough that they know I'm a pretty average guy and not too weird. Video games would just come off as my hobby at that point.
Granted, I don't go into detail about exactly how much time I invest. 20 hours in a game is probably considered "a lot of time in a video game" to most people.
