The paste is supposed to close the microscopic pores in the metal's surface.
When you take the heat sink off the paste breaks and ends up looking like OP's picture.

There's paste there, but it's not very good quality.

Want to know something even worse?
Those metal tops protecting the silicon die underneath also have shitty paste that will become dried up and useless within 2 years.

Pic related, the only way to fix it is to take a huge risk and pop them off, clean them, and use a proper thermal adhesive.

>>
>>322700516
Well now you know. It doesn't stay wet. It's just wet so you can get it out of a tube. It makes a contact conduit between the processor and the heat sink so the heat transfers properly instead of staying on the chip and damaging it.

Now that you've opened it up though, the contact is broken and you have to replace it with fresh paste.

BTW I can tell that's a ps3 because I had to get a new heat sink for mine too. FYI the heat sink will do nothing to stop the overheating. (fans get really loud, correct? and it's very annoying). There's a fundamental flaw in the way they made the RSX in a certain generation of PS3 and it gets so hot that it fucks up the solder under the RSX chip. The only way to fix it is to perform a reflow on it (or have someone else do it for you) and hope that the solder settles properly. This is still just a band aid though and will need to be done again until even doing that doesn't solve the problem.

I think the op is implying that the ps4 needs no thermal paste, because the shitty paste they use dries so fast it's as if nothing was there anyway.

Which I've never understood why manufacturers use shitty paste since decent paste would only add about a dollar to the cost.

>>
>>322702927
>Which I've never understood why manufacturers use shitty paste since decent paste would only add about a dollar to the cost.
I want to add to this.

There is no fucking consumer advocacy in the world. None whatsoever. The government is too small to actually vet any product industrial, commercial, or consumer before it hits the shelves.

Some people try. Consumer Reports, Tom's Hardware, Linus Tech Tips, and the like. They own and run websites that give expert opinions of product and make a great living off of it but the vast majority do not care enough to give them the power to force manufacturers to not fuck the consumer.

People have no standards either, they just care that someone works, and we're rapidly moving towards a world where people ACCEPT that nothing lasts. Thirty years ago the reputation that you built shit would murder your company, now, everyone expects everything to be shit, so it is built like shit and thus we'll never have anything good.
>>
>>322703601
You realize that corps care even more for every little cent compared to the avrg person right?

So how often do you guys reapply thermal paste to your rig?

what's the recommended time frame for changing it?
>>
No, the fucking consumer should be less price sensitive and buy the superior product. Companies only have to cut back on everything because they've realized the consumer knows fuck-all and buys things only based on price tag.

The consumer will always be a dumbshit, you can't fix their sensitivity to pricing. What has to happen is that government has to step in and impose a totalitarian-level of manufacturing standards to ensure minimal waste with superior performance: universal power adapters, uniform connectors, modular design, interchangeability, capacity to be repaired and people who can make a living off fixing things.

You only use a small daub of thermal paste, about the size of two grains of rice.

And you don't spread it manually because that creates an uneven surface. Instead you just directly attach your heat sink plate over it, which causes the thermal paste to spread out nice an evenly as you screw the heat sink on.

Get a EVGA 750 G2.
ASRock is a brand for cheap motherboards, they're under average quality, not great at all specially when overclocking.
>D3H
And no it wont do, Never cheap out in your motherboard and in your PSU since this parts are the last you will ever change if you ever do at all.

If you want the best out overclocking get a GA-Z97-UD5H, a cheaper version is GA-Z97-UD3H but you cant use M2 and 2 SATA ports at the same time and a bit worse for overclocking.

Your HSF(212 EVO) is a bit too cheap for overclocking, its not great for it but it does the job better than the stock intel HSF, get a NH-U14S.

If you don't live in Africa or don't put PC in your ass and you don't plan to overclock it, then original cooler that comes in box is enough. Otherwise it would make more sense buying retail cpu. Though if difference in price is too small, then don't bother.

Replaced the thermal on mine recently, but I'm too much of a bitch to try and pop off the plates, guess I just have to deal with the fan ramping up after 20 minutes.

My current rig is almost 8 years old and I haven't reapplied the thermal paste on my CPU. No temperature problems at all

I'm not sure it'd trust it to stay the course of half a decade, mind you.

1) Too much paste. The point of using thermal paste is as an intermediate substance between the plate of the CPU lid and the heatsink's mounting surface. Air is too insulating. Just about every thermal paste you'd consider is somewhat less conductive than copper itself, so you just want enough to replace the air. If you had a perfectly level heatsink and CPU, there would be no need for thermal paste as they'd have complete contact.

2) As a continuation of too much paste, its going over the damn sides. Not harmful but obviously undesirable with non-conductive paste, but worse yet a fair bit are conductive which could lead to shorting the motherboard.

3) Spreading it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGRLaFv3hZw should be a good enough visible example. Air bubbles should be practically nonexistent, while they could persist after mounting the heatsink if the paste is spread beforehand.

Alright thanks, I appreciate the help. Picked the EVGA 750 G2, UD3H, NH-U14S and removed the SSD for now to fit in my budget

I would change the NH-U14S for a U12S and get the UD5H instead the UD3H.
If you cant afford it yet, keep the UD3H.
Get a cheap Sandisk Ultra ll 240GB if you want a cheap SSD that works.

If you have other questions ask.

>increase of one degree over the course of 3 years

At this rate it is more likely to change the motherboard, and CPU altogether than thermal paste.

Never. Do it once properly then clean your case from dust and build up once a year, every year. I do mine before summer in may.

6 Years now and no problems.
