What happened to crossovers being so prevalent in the early 2000s? They made up some of the best games of the time, but now things like #FE don't even do justice to the original franchises justice.
Will we ever get any good crossovers that aren't just leftovers from project cross zone?left or right /v/?

What kind of crossovers do you even want?
There is no one to crossover with Capcom in fighting games now that Disney bought Marvel and SNK is trash.
Mario and Sonic is a sports game released every two years or whatever.
What else can even crossover? Mass Effect vs Dragon Age? MGVS x Witcher?
The age of crossovers is dead, at best you'll get shitty indie crossovers like Undertale visits 5 Nights at Freddy's.

SMT x Fire emblem had a lot of potential, and Tekken x street fighter is now just "Tekken 7: feat Akuma!"
DMC x Bayo would be cool, maybe even some sort of valve crossover.
The Capcom fighting crossovers were never as good as their original IPs.

I also wish crossovers were more prevalent. Not even just among fighting games but if there were more crossover games among video game franchises that were somehow still in the same genre as the original franchises, that'd be sweet. I'd like to see a Tomb Raider/Uncharted game. That'd be great. Metroid x Halo would never happen but it'd be cool too.

In terms of fighting games, Nintendo vs. Capcom, Square-Enix vs. Capcom, even EA vs. Capcom would be sweet although the jewing would be something fierce.
Disney vs. Capcom would probably never happen but it'd be fucking great if we got Disney characters, Marvel characters, and Star Wars characters all against Capcom fighters.

Crossover media has been flooding the market ever since The Avengers came out. Its more prevalent than ever now.

We saw another one not too many years ago (SFxTekken), and we might see some new ones in the years to come, but the late 90s to early 2000s crossover era isn't likely to ever come back.

There's a lot more going on than just any one thing, but the base things to note are:
PC and phone sales are doing exceptionally well for such a small company.
The chinese in charge bought SNK to make videogames.
The management wants to make videogames.
Pachinko sales are down, and will decrease further with the new regulations, so it's as good a time as any to resume videogames.
The SNK that's making KOF 14 isn't the same SNK that made 94-2001, or the SNK that made 2002-XIII. It's a combination of very old staff and new employees who know how to work with modern day tools.

More like consumers don't understand how videogames work. While it's true they never fully did, at least back in the olden days, they had the general idea.
For instance, pic related, while a masterpiece, was considered on release 'pixelated,' and not 'HD enough like muh mortal kombat.'
But moving from these super advanced sprites to 3d models hasn't made things any less pixelated. Still, it will probably help their review scores. KOF 13 lost to SF4, MK, and even the DC shit fighters, simply because it wasn't 3d.
