Fuck, if the story had been A1-tier in A2, it might have been my GOAT. Or original FFT for that matter.
It felt so fucking weird playing A2 with such a minimalist (and that's being charitable) story after FFT was so in-depth.
I really want A3 though.

I seriously hope we'll get A3 sometime in the future. But since SE is so busy with so many console games I doubt we'll get it before they put XV, KH 3 and VIIR out of the door. And even then, SE doesn't like the 3DS for some reason and I doubt they'll ever release a tactics game for consoles nowadays.

Honestly, as I bitched in op, the story's probably one of the worst aspects of A2.
The characters are a close second.
In A2 you're there for the gameplay and the autistic character customization and making "that perfect fighting force" that can take down any challenge.
Which is a real shame too, because FFT and A1 had amazing stories and characters.
In short, no it doesn't get any better. FFT War of The Lions is great though, and will rub your character/plot itches nicely.

Setting is perfect for it, you could have dark, batshit plot, God-tier music. Would be the GOAT tactics game.

Just explore and do what you like. I advise having at least one summoner though.
Not because they're OP or anything, but because the summons are neat and flashy, and in a game where you'll be hitting stuff with a sword for 90 hours, a little color can help.

Use plenty of save-files. The game likes to lock you in before hard-ass fights, and there will be no grinding until you beat it.
In some cases being able to load an older save can rescue the entire run.
Job-wise, do whatever you want. It's really hard to fuck up in FFT because you can just grind until you can one-shot everything.
