Any recommendations for some single-player RPG that offers a bit of a story, somehow gives you some kind of comfy atmosphere and maybe even is a bit iconic?
I basically stopped gaming like 5 years ago but I need something before going to bed. Just something I can look forward to in my shit life :)
I really like all kinds of 8bit-style games, older games are also fine. Everything that runs on an average 2010 laptop.
Both real time and round based are fine.
Fallout was pretty good for that but I went to that base that you have to blow up too early, spent about 4 hours in there (almost no skills, no armor, good weapons, no equipment, quickload every 10 seconds) and after beating the boss with a 14 dmg rifle with about 5% accuracy on the boss' head the game suddenly got boring as I didn't want to to all the stuff you were supposed to do beforehand.
Thanks /v/

PS: boss battle took about 45 minutes, too. Then another 2 hours because I only had 2 bullets for the rifle but fucked up a save game
Bonus if installable on Ubuntu, tho Windows is perfectly fine too, just takes longer to boot up
shameful self bump

secrets of grindea on steam, you can try out the beta before you buy it. It's pretty good

What game is that in your picture? Do you recommend it? I'm looking for a rpg too.

oh that was just a random image search.
What I can recommend for mobiles tho is Inotia. idk what version they at now but for long bus rides n stuff this was beautiful. Really nice blurry design, great system for skilling/picking characters, ... Can't say much about the story tho

glad I picked that one, you reanimated that thread

Suikoden
Geneforge or Avernum.
Go play the remake of Avernum 1 - "Escape from the pit".
No, maybe they're not "iconic" since they were indie games before indie was cool. However, they're by far some of the best crpgs you'll find. They have wonderful settings, plots, player choices and writing quality.
Would run on just about anything.

The Ys(the actual name) games might be what you are looking for. They all are fun as fuck. They also are all or most of them are on Steam.

A 2010 laptop should be able to run DS emulators, in which case I suggest Rune Factory 3.

The Soul Blazer games are pretty good for what you're searching. Just download a SNES emulator, the ROMs and have fun yo.

>Geneforge
Fuck yeah I love the Generforge series. Needs to be more rpgs where you can screw everyone over at the end except for yourself and gain godlike powers.

Aye, I second this recommendation.
I just found a little bit hard for me (and I played on the medium difficulty), or perhaps I'm simply not good at that game.
Maybe get a PSP emulator and play some Tales games or other comfy JRPG.

Pic related checks off all the criteria.
Some bosses will be pretty hard or annoying if you don't know which spells to use or how to optimize your equipment. Other than that, it's pretty easy, and comfy to the max.
Emulate pic related senpai
