A 970.
I recently bought a 144hz 1440p monitor and although the 970 copes fairly well, I'd like a little bit more power.
Also, this will keep me happy until the pascal x80Ti.

>>
>>322589003
I don't see why you'd bother with such a small upgrade. If you're shelling out for a new card, wait until the new ones come out next year and put down an extra hundred on something great in the 900 series.

Like, even now a 950 is only about $60 more and is SO much better. No reason to ditch your old card for a marginal improvement and then feel the need to do it again in a year when you could drop a bit more and have something reasonably futureproof.

It is but my issue lies in you telling him to wait for things, if he 'just waits' now he'll be told to 'just wait' then and futureproof is a buzzword.
>>
>>322589483
He was saying wait until the new cards come out because every time a new series releases the old ones get cheaper. This is the dumbest time to buy a gpu.

Well, I'd like to play ofc. new games - new Desu Ex, Kingdom Come: Deliverance (I have preordered to get access to alpha and it runs like 720/20fps right now) and so on - just new and HW demanding games.

I should have specified better - what I meant if it is worth even upgrading anything? Like, this is quite old and shitty PC and if it wouldn't be better just build a new one instead.

Well now that we have all that cleared up. I'd be looking at complete/ near complete overhaul.

The only things I'd salvage are the case, HDD, RAM and maybe the PSU.
>>
>>322590019
You're right, it is pretty shitty. I'd probably upgrade it piecemeal though. Get yourself a couple more RAM sticks, then a better PSU to handle more demanding hardware, then a solid state, then a newer GPU, then a motherboard/CPU... and hey, you just bought a whole new computer but without having to save up enough for all the parts at once.

>But I haven't bought a new game in like two plus years
Are you upgrading just for the sake of it? If you haven't played any recent games then you don't know how well your current rig runs it. Go ahead and play a AAA game from 2015 on the max settings in your default resolution. If it doesn't play it at 50-60fps then go upgrade.

Is it possible the fan the cpu came with was kinda shitty? Need more thermal pace?
>>
>>322592040
Either you installed the heatsink poorly or it's faulty. Even a stock heatsink shouldn't be letting the cpu hit 99 unless you're like rendering videos or some shit.

That said, stock intel coolers are garbage. Get yourself something like a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. $30 and cools like 70% as well as liquid cooling with way less hassle. Make sure you're installing it right too, look up videos on seating the heatsink right and applying thermal paste properly.

mATX cases typically make shit hot as fuck under air cooling, but they're still loads better than consoles.
>>
>>322597085
Went with an i5 6500 because of the price to performance ratio compared to the higher end i7, which in my opinion are the only i7's to bother with. This is overclocked to about 3.6 and I haven't had the demand to push it further. Once more vidya start catching onto DirectX 12 or maybe when 4790 tier i7's aren't so damn much I'll upgrade to an i7 but for now this processor performs perfectly.
As for the z-170 first reason is I needed it to take the 6th gen i5. I head read great reviews and comments about its onboard audio (which has been great so far, better than the sound in my old rig). I've had a good experience with Gigabyte mobos in the past as well so I figured to stick with the brand. Also picked it for the number ports it supports. More USB support mainly compared to other mobos around its price too.
And LEDs of course.
>>
>>322598153
Oh and I forgot to mention the amount of PCIe/PCIe 3.0 lanes the z-170 has was another selling point.
>>
>>322598387
>>322598153
DDR4 support and it takes your Skylake as well, you forgot. Something like the Z-97 doesn't have DDR4 nor will it take a Skylake.

>>
>>322598627
As >>322598749 said, a 980ti would've been complete overkill without 144hz monitors. 970 is perfect for 60hz.

>Except that the 6500 doesn't overclock.

>>
>>322598749
Not the same guy. How would a 980ti be useless with his monitors, that doesnt even make sense. When you buy a gpu theres more to worry about than refresh rate and resolution of your display.
>>
>>322599450
Such as?
>>
>>322598025
nope
>>
>>322599450
For the price jump from 970 to 980ti you should just stick a 970 if you're not going 4k or 144hz
980 is that retarded middle child that offers not enough performance difference for its price compared to a 970, its a waste.
>>
>>322599612
How demanding whatever youre rendering is? Very much so for games. With all of the modern graphics options in games a 980ti is pretty appealing even if you can only display 1080p60hz. This will only continue to grow and a 980ti will play as a investment as not only will it last the user a long while before its completely obsolete, it will also compliment the lower end monitor longer. Then again im one of those guys who likes to squeeze all the life out of an item as possible before upgrading to save myself money.
>>
My comp is fucked, it will crash/freeze with my screen going to a single colour and the only way to turn it off is by using the power button. Then after to trying to boot it up again it won't show anything on screen.
