Red is only edgy in his fanart. In the games. He's just the strongest trainer around. And he doesn't talk because he didn't talk in the first game. And then people thought they should draw him edgy for some fucking reason

Think the Pokemon Special manga, or at least summaries of it, helped a lot. Red was a lot more competent than Ash and some relatively edgy shit happens in that manga, at least compared to the anime, so I'm guessing it evolved into Red = edgemaster at some point.
