OP here. All of the reasoning I have seen against the MC is laughable at best.

>he like isn't a character

Sort of, but that's the point. YOU are supposed to step into his shoes and save the galaxy.

>can't he like die and stuff?

So can all believable heroes. This dude FUCKS. He jumps out of ships and space and lives (multiple times), he takes on entire armies by himself, he saves Humanity/the galaxy multiple times, and all does this by taking damage and getting back up.

>I don't like leddit Halo, hurr hurr fuck 343i

k cuck fuck back off to /vg/

>Doom guy

LMAO at least John is a believable character, doom guy is clearly bullshit. I could make my own game and make my hero invincible or OP as fuck and then say he's the best.

>arbiter was better

Arbiter is cool af, but he doesn't surmount the same odds as the MC
>>
>>322554017
some other anon in a different thread was saying that the elites have some kind of xenomorph-esque second mouth that you just never see. the feelers are just for trapping prey while the little jaw goes to work. sounded like bullshit, but it would be cool
>>
>>322553587
It was more the fact they were part of a zealotous and manipulative Covenant that deemed the Human species Heretics (Despite Humans being hinted at being favored of some sort by the Forerunners)...And the fact they have a massive technological advantage, giving them the capability to turn entire planets into glass from concentrated plasma fire.

It's stated in the ground war, Humans were at an advantage thanks to Spartan 2's, but when the Covenant gets their ass kicked on the ground, they just head to space to destroy the Planet from the Air. After a while, wars on colonies were no longer really called wars - most of the time, they bring in the Spartan 2's to evacuate the places and stall for time before the inevitable nuking.

But that's wrong you fucknuts, the Dude does indeed have a character. If you FUCKING READ THE BOOKS or paid attention to the game. He just doesn't have much to say because he was raised since he was young to be a military weapon.

easiest way to remedy this is to say that that idea isn't canon. the elites are certainly stronger than humans, and strong enough to do shit like lift ghosts and warthogs. however, they can't do the absolute madman SII lifts without risk of injuring their own muscles (like a guy on an adrenaline rush tearing a muscle lifting a car), and they aren't nearly as fast

take that big coward out of his armor. what are you left with?

take him out and put him in overalls, and a green shirt.

will he ever be a man that transcends the physical? or will he forever remain a template "hero" that is a faggot?

>uses bad ass swords, shields, bows, boomerangs, bombs, hammers and other cool weapons
All of which can be deflected by a normal human shield, as Link's doppelganger can attest. Also, they can't penetrate normal armor.

>can use magic
At a price. He can use it for a little while, then he runs out shortly. And he never has access to Chateau Romani as an adult, so no infinite mana bar.

>impossibly durable
AS long as the story permits it. He can be easily overpowered by gerudos should he attempt to infiltrate their base, and they're shown to be pretty weak themselves aside from some fancy swordplay.

>can toss obelisks
Only with special made gauntlets.

The rest are meh. Link's a man who relies on his tools. He can't do much against someone who's naturally competent and doesn't need toys.

They tried, but they did it so hamfistedly bad.

'Hur hur who's the machine, oops, it's me'. Like, c'mon, I know Cortana and him were close, and that Cortana was going through Rampancy, but you'd think Cortana would be a bit more eloquent in expressing worry for John. Or you know, something more interesting than the 'man or machine' thing. Because the Chief ain't a machine, he's a SOLDIER.

I was pumped for 343 taking a crack at having John take a look at himself. It coulda been better. Been better if we didn't get introduced to Prometheans or anything like that Forerunner BS and stuck with Humans and infighting and shit. UNSC could have picked him up and said 'HEY, we got problems with the Elites. Elites respect power, so, congrats, you get to escort a dignitary to do negotiations'. Maybe for the first 5 minutes of the Blue Team mission. But they dropped it completely after that. And now for Halo 6, they're saying the same thing they said they'd do for Halo 5. "It'll be a more human story."

I haven't been able to play Halo 5, I'm speaking mostly of Halo 4's story.

The Chief has such an intriguing character to me, someone who's brave, takes initiative, a dry sense of humor but not really rude about it. He does his job, but thanks to upbringing and being made a weapon, he's just...well, he's defined as a soldier. He's hardened to fighting both humans and aliens alike.

The guy even heavily dislikes being called a hero, since he's just doing what's expected of him. But he's never expressed much discomfort at being a Soldier. It's interesting, having him be confronted with the fact that he can't fully connect with normal people - The dude is like a Militaristic NEET. He's not even an asshole, and is totally capable of being a bro in his own way (The Third book with him not handing Johnson over to ONI for dissection when he's revealed to be immune to the Flood's hijacking).
>>
>>322557280
He only ever fought against enemies who also use guns and armor (ones more advanced than his)

Also he uses a sword and his fists to kill things quite often depending on how you play , not just guns

One good thing I could say about Halo 5 is that they portray the Mantle as a negative thing.

That's pretty bad, BUT SO MUCH STORY POTENTIAL
If the Chief was removed from the games now, or, I don't fucking know, give him a book about him in between games, or him being put in charge of the defense. Or at least a short story.

I want to see that Marine again. Not to shoe-horn in any romance (dear lord no) but just to have her confront him and just...Ask. Ask where he's been, what he's allowed to talk about. And have him ask her where she's been up to. If 343 wants to humanize him so bad, they can at least give him another character to speak with.

Yes. Because he overcomes absurd odds, routinely beating multiple deadly opponents with loads of experience with better gear than him because he's that resourceful and that good. And that's just a regular firefight. This isn't quicktime scripted shit either, this is all player-controlled.

Do you think Raiden could take on five other cyborg ninjas at once, each just as well-equipped as him and highly-skilled and experienced to boot, plus a dozen or more regular enemies? Could he do the same when a few UGs and a Metal Gear RAY are thrown in to that equation, with only some support from regular-ass cyborgs and a friendly UG?

Because the equivalent happens to Captain King regularly, and he STILL fucks shit up with remarkable efficiency.

I can't believe Frankie actually said Cortana isn't evil. And that if you do think she's evil, you're obviously just part of "the younger audience". Lost a good amount of goodwill I had for him after that.
>>
Halo 5s story is notthatgreat

Halo 5s MP is Extremely good, but lacking content

That's all I wanted to say
>>
>>322562530
Alright, I haven't gotten reading into what happened in Halo 5. What happened with Cortana? And what did Frankie mean by 'not evil', like, just saying 'oh she was just acting under different morals'?
>>
>>322562759
I completely agree with you. I'm hoping gametypes like infection come soon. And maybe playable Elites at some point before Halo 6 comes out?
>>
>>322562914
Basically, Cortana's rampant fragments she purged into the Didact's ship survived and landed of a Forerunner planet, Genesis. There, she got inserted into the apparently repaired Domain where she says she was "cured" of rampancy. She and a Forerunner AI called the Warden Eternal believe the Mantle belongs not to humans or other races, but to AI, "the Created." And to anect for imposed peace, she unleached Forerunner machines called Guardians to polic the galaxy. Even activating them caused millions of people to die, and when John asks her about it, he realizes she both already knows about the deaths and doesn't care.

When Osris tried to save John and the rest of Blue Team from Cortana imprisoning them inside a Cryptum for 10,000 years, she gets really vindictive against them and insults them a lot. She then broadcasts a communication to the whole galaxy, saying everyone will follow her rule, or else. One punishment she made for disloyalty was to use the Composer on them. She them EMPs Earth, probably causing even more death.
>>
>>322563890
...
And what was Frankies explination and justification as to why Cortana wasn't evil?
>>
>>322564154
http://time.com/4090404/halo-5-frank-oconnor/
>“But my hopes for the future of the universe are that we can tell a realistic story. I saw a complaint online, somebody had been reading spoilers, they hadn’t played the game, and they said ‘Why is this character evil?’ And my question back to them is, ‘What makes you say they’re evil?’ Certainly a lot of our younger players are going to struggle with that subtlety, that nuance, because they’re expecting Darth Vader.”

And he justifies Blue Team having no character in Halo 5 by saying they never had characters to begin with.

Cortana's got her heart or RAM or whatever a computer's heart is in the right place.

She saw a chance to create peace and took it. Sure, it's by forcibly subduing every race in the known galaxy, and saying "Give up all capacity to resist my goals or else me, my forces, and computer Quislings will fuck your shit", but the goal is noble. She just went about it in a fucked up way.

Cortana shouldn't have been surprised when in response to her faggotry every single species collectively says
>SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED
>WON'T TAKE MY MA5 WHILE I'M STILL ALIVE
>I'LL TAKE MY GUNS OVER HOLOGRAPHIC BUNS
>>
>>322562759
You're absolutely right

>>322564672
>>322563890

You know, I wish that 343 foreshadowed this a bit better. They coulda even had an opportunity to let Johns character breathe a bit.

Imagine, if you will. After the whole 'hand Cortana over' business in Halo 4, you have Cortana talking about how all humans can be so selfish, or just being humanity hating in her rampant state, that everyone, when given a chance, can turn up like that commander, or like ONI...And then, after a pregnant pause, , the Chief just replies, his voice gentle and to the point.
"I don't believe that."

You coulda had him trying to remind Cortana that everything he's done and has been ordered to do is to keep humanity surviving. Even if he doesn't fully understand undisciplined civies, he's shown on multiple occasions, in books and in games, that he does have some amount of sympathy and care for them. Like a socially retarded older brother.
>>
>>322564962
Bingo.

Most evil people have their hearts in the right place. They just go about shit in atrocious ways, and their end goals may not be that great in reality. For example, Stalin probably believed that he was justified in his purges that killed millions because he felt himself to be vital to a global socialist revolution.

Slap a pretty idea on a monster's methods and people will say they were right, or that they were the real heroes.
>>
>>322565782
Yeah, they could've done more to make this whole plotline more palatable.

One thing I found odd was her talking about people treating AI like second-class citizens, even though we've never encountered that in the games. People have always treated Cortana with the utmost respect and people even elected an AI to lead them on Meridian. And she talks about AI having an expiration date, even though every biological being has one as well.

>>322566113
Something funny about what Frankie said was that she's not like Darth Vader, even though she's actually a lot like him. Just worse.

Yeah. 343 shit the bed, went for bombast over nuance when they could've had some of both.

Do we know much about Rampancy in the Halo universe, or is it still just the AI equivalent of senility/dementia?

I vaguely remember Marathon had these different stages of rampancy, with distinct effects on AI behavior and perception of the world. If the cure for Rampancy given by the Domain meant accepting some of the symptoms as permanent, it could explain Cortana going apeshit.

Episode 7, Who's Listening, is Particularily fun, with the Narrator speaking to an old, retired ODST who saw John during the incident with the ODST's ganging on him and getting the shit kicked out of them (And petrovsky's older appearance in a previous episode).

>Chief getting smeared to take a jab at ONI

John...John had a rough life. I haven't even played Halo 5 or watched any footage, but it's just kinda heartbreaking. I know he's not the villain in this, but he's getting smeared and used as a tool. People decrying about the whole...monstrous soldier since childhood thing, but the guy doesn't get any sympathy - mostly because everyone who can stand and say 'Wait a moment, I know for a fact he's a soldier, and hyper-lethal, but he's not a machine' are all dead. Johnson, Cortana, most marines he's helped are likely also dead, almost all the Spartan 2's are MIA...

Only people who could probably defend him is Halsey (Who treats him less as a person who can feel and more like a science experiment), Mendez (Who trained him and see him as a soldier only) and...Well, the Arbiter (Who sees him as an equal in combat).

Poor John - If you think about it, it's kinda heartbreaking. Even if he did want to confide in someone, he doesn't really have that option.
