It was the first big launch of 2013 for a floundering system, in the year that happened to be the one where 3DS sales started picking up. It was also the first new entry into the series since PoR and the first new handheld entry since Sacred fucking Stones, and it was easily marketed in the US more than every other localized FE game combined.The marketing barely focused on the waifu stuff, it was mostly sold as the last big bang of the FE series that was about to die.
Hell I know like 6 people who bought it, half of which were girls who only had a 3DS for Pokemon. It just happened to be in the right place in the right time of the 3DS life cycle to be something that everyone picked up. But no, it was only the waifushit that was the seller.
