This same thing happened to me 6 months after I got mine. See if you can still warranty it through Nintendo; it'll take a while but fuck it.
Now, with that being said, 90% of the time when a gamepad is unresponsive like that, the battery pack inside is dead. 3 days shipping, and like $15.

OP you're fine, this exact thing happened to me when I replaced a broken LCD screen on the gamepad. The battery is most likely malfunctioning for some reason.
To fix it just unscrew the back cover and disconnect/reconnect the battery a couple of times. If it still doesn't work the battery might be dead, you can get a replacement battery for chump change.
Repairing a Wiiu gamepad is way, way cheaper than buying a new one.
