There's a few lingering zombies from the stagnant, mosquito-infested pond that was last gen like Assassin's Creed and post-MW CoD but they seem to be slowly dying out. I don't think I even know what the next games in their series' are going to be which is pretty crazy if you think about how saturated they've been.

I'd prefer something smaller and level-like like Banjo Kazooie than Open World. Places seperated into sections and "biomes"
Like scaling a cliffside and the side is a 3d platform challenge and a checkpoint at the end. Maybe an alternate route up where you bop off bullet bills and secrets behind waterfalls akin to M64 and the like and Warp pipes to transfer you to different areas.

The series seems to always DIE and then hope is always put back in the people's eyes when something is announced. Then hope is kicked out when the main series goes into another hiatus
People WANT a Generations 2, or an Adventure 3 or even just something like the old games, but Sega constantly needs to CHANGE the whole thing up and make something the fans arent asking for.
The series is quietly fading away and the fanbase has become more and more quiet and hopeless.
Hopefully those new announcements may be new mainline games because even Sonic fans arent giving Boom much attention.
