Really, the idea was already created by Valve with HL2's scrapped physgun, and both JB Mod and Garry's Mod were the most simple mods any retard could make. It's what Garry's Mod evolved into that made it great, and as far as I remember, the game itself only got better, though I haven't played it in about six years now. I know the community is shit, but it's honestly been a rollercoaster of good and shit from the day it started.

I played a lot of TTT around 2010-2011 and I still haven't seen that kind of fun with random strangers since. I tried a bit recently and it seems that good servers are harder to find. Too many kids, too many Minecraft maps.
I play Vanilla Sandbox alone and build various flying machines out of balloons, flat objects and armchairs while my character model is a skeleton. You should try it, it's fun.

The first version of GMOD came out in 2004 and got a huge playerbase by the time Garry "officially" released GMOD 10 as a $10 addon for HL2 in about 2008 or so. One of them even switched to PC just so he could play gmod and was kind of dissapointed when he realized that all of that stuff is set up before hand and was surprised by long loading screens.
