Good. Made lots of progress the last couple days.

Taking a break today for the most part though to relax and brainstorm what exactly I should do next.
Probably work in party stats like DEF and ATK and all that stuff. And then the inventory, and item usage I suppose.

Also I wanna give the dog a bite attack, but I dunno what kind of interactivity to give it, or maybe since its a basic attack I should not make it interactive like the fury punches.

Writing your own code to interface with hardware, instead of using existing libraries. Though even that might not qualify if you need some assembly to get time-sensitive shit done quickly. Pretty much just anything that already exists, runs efficiently, and would be generic from one game to another would qualify.

Do 2D, don't do 3D unless you use someone's engines. Also what language you chose depends on what you want to do. If you want to do low level programming where you get to explore all the different problem spaces, do C++. IF you want a quick and easy language with lots of tools built for it, C# then Java.

It kind of depends on your personality, but what seems to help me is trivializing it. Instead of making it into this big thing that I take incredibly seriously and have to pour several hours into, I try to make it something that I piss away a few minutes on here and there. Those minutes turn into hours, and fill moments of boredom in the day. Slowly, a habit forms, and it becomes no more challenging than browsing the internet.

i was thinking fairly standard platform, but your health represents your character. At full health, you're a well human, but as you loose life, skins falls off and you become skeleton.

each "state" has different skill set, and you have abilities to heal/hurt yourself

Why not have special powers as a skeleton? There are places you cannot normally reach by just yourself so you have to take off your arm and throw it with the other arm and have to control that arm through either areas too small for your entire body or areas that are too far and only lobbing your arm can get to there.

Or pressure plates that require you to leave most of your body to open a way and you have something like just your head and you roll around trying to maintain control while having very little defenses against enemies.

How about at a critical state and a with a fatal blow it knocks your bones about, but when normally you would die you get a few seconds to try to gather your body up once more to get a second lease at life.

I don't know, just some thoughts.

Basically you have to escpae from a randomly generated cave (in 3D) but there is no map, and it's very dim and there are monsters and orcs and underground lakes everywhere, and you can't really fight so you have to sneak around and when you die you get like a 3D overview and shown how far you got and whether you took a dead end or not.

as a general advice - try and nopt have one-mistake instant-stage-ruining spots like the nonexistent walls to the left (at the 1 block each side-walljump right above spawn) this makes players repeat everything up until there 5-30 times before they get past it and adds to an exponentially longer playthrough time unless you play perfectly

I used a new system for building levels, reducing the time it took to make a polished level map in-game from weeks to days.

For awhile the levels were built in the software because the engine was still being tweaked and changed, so levels were having to be changed spontaneously to accommodate, but now that the engine is pretty secure, I switched over to building levels in Tiled first.

If you don't mind the insanity than you can dev on your own.
Art is a skill that you can learn with persistence. I personally can't draw for shit, but I've picked up 3d modeling rather easily.
Motivation is what the weak claim makes devs strong. It's not. Motivation is trash, discipline yourself. Start by working an hour each day on your game, even if it's just watching a tutorial or simply opening up unity. Slowly work your way up. It takes patience and practice, but eventually you'll make it there.

You do realise that in the SA games they changed it so that sonic and friends actually physically collected the critters for this very reason? In the original games it was just cosmetic, but in the SA games they gave the critters some meaning with the chao garden

It's one of the few things I'll admit that actually make sense about the SA games
