first you have to learn how to expand as efficently as possible so you have cash to recruit more mages who will research your shit, then you go down magic pathes that benefit the most from your most natural magic path (for example if you're all fire you would probable do conjuration/evocation first, if you are earth; alteration, etc). Next you get the reserach you need to cast big spells while you recruit a sufficient number of troops to eat shit so your mages can cast the big spells.
the manual of the game has a nice little step by step tutorial for you to give the basic jest
