I have no doubt that the developers deliberately chose not to include local co-op specifically so that people who want to play the game together would need to buy the game twice. But as I already pointed out, my complaint had nothing to do with money. Even if my friend and I both owned the game, I'd prefer to play local co-op when the two of us happen to be in the same room (and of course online co-op would be used otherwise). Stop pretending that you don't understand this.

Because most of the people who bought this wanted to play with their friends over the internet because they are adults now who can't walk next door and ask if Timmy can come over to play.
Beyond that who knows why they left it out, it would have been a great inclusion but maybe the emulation is shit and won't allow it, maybe they were lazy, who knows or cares. You have a million other options for playing the MS series with friends via local multiplayer, go buy it or pirate it on a different platform or run an emulator.

For the record, I checked just to make sure and you have to select missions from the main menu as opposed to multiplayer. The multiplayer tab is for online but you can select a local two player option within the main mission tab.

I get it's a little hard to grasp that pc games would have local play because not a lot of people use it, but I sure as hell do when friends come over with booze and want to play games.

I'd say that has a lot to do with the group that ported the game, metal slug 1 as it is came as a shitty port on steam on release day, there was a lot of slowdown complaints. It's no wonder they didn't list all features.
