Anyone else use this microphone for gaming? is it true that the thing picks up background noise like crazy?
>>
Why in the fuck would you buy a $100 to talk to people in games? That kind of mic is for recording shit.
>>
>>322337840
Uhh... wtf?
Why the FUCK would I use a god damn broadcaster's mic to talk in a video game?

You ever heard of headsets OP? I'm not making a fucking podcast here.
>>
>>322337921
>not wanting high quality things

in saying that, OP that mic is decent. but its REALLY big. make sure you acutally realise how big it is before you buy it, because it looks a lot smaller than it is.

blue yeti is shit, anyone buying a mic for christs sake don't get a blue yeti, snowball or a CADU37

AT2020 til the end
>>
>>322337840
Why do you care? You know you're only buying it as an extra butt plug.
>>
I use it, and it is extremely sensitive. Just set up push-to-talk in whatever you're chatting with.

It receives your speech very well though, even from a few feet away.
>>
>>322337840
Its pretty gud 10/10
if it was shit it wouldnt be #1 selling.
>>
A friend bought that.
The only difference is you could hear more shit in the background.

His voice was still annoying as fuck, except now you could hear his keyboard, his dogs barking, his fucking chair squeaking, FUCK.

I'll tell you what I know
>brother got one of these
>has it standing ~30cm away on his desk
>sound picks up easily, is very clear, good sound
>often also picks up his ceiling fan two meters away, not too annoying but it still picks up
>it's actually huge and takes up a good chunk of desk space
>expensive

Meanwhile
>my ~$50 Samson GO microphone
>removed the black metal stand, since it serves no purpose
>picks up sound poorly from just a short distance away
>but sounds absolutely amazing, at least on par with the Blue Yeti, up close
>personally modified it with a piece of 2mm thick steel wire, attached to my AKG K550
>doesn't take up much if any background noise
>doesn't take up disk space
>>
>>322338159

it's only best selling because people don't fucking research their mics before buying them

blue yeti is average, especially if you plan to do some podcasting

>>322338098

Audio technica's 2020 with a pop filter is the way to go, and it's about the same price as a yeti.

Inexpensive. Sounds great. Clips right onto the cable wherever you like, or if you're using wireless headphones for some reason, you'll have to settle for clipping it on some clothes. Or if you can't be arsed to wear clothes, I have nfi. Anyway, it's good. I've had these paired with Sennheiser HD 650's for years.

Well that's the thing. It's $50 for an OK product. It WORKS.

But for a lesser cost you can get a more comfortable headphone with far better sound quality, as well as a microphone that sounds great for like $5 (zalman). It will also hold together longer unlike headphones that frequently break from nothing.

>>
>>322340832
Unless he's intending to make a profession out of it, he does NOT NEED a better microphone.

Now, if he has a lot of money to spare, then sure why not get something that sounds a little bit better. But it's a lot of extra dollars for only a small gain in sound quality.

The Zalman mic is astonishingly good for its small cost, this is why it's recommended constantly. You really can't tell much of a difference from a Zalman and a Yeti, except a Yeti picks up more background noise.

For that mic it's really beneficial to invest in a boom arm to position it near your face. Then you can turn the gain levels way down and get some really superb quality. I've used it for years with it sitting on my desk and really you're just gimping your microphone that way, only getting half the quality.

There's no use in arguing it, but that guy has clearly also fucked up his Zalman somehow. The ones I used never sounded like that, nor did they pick up background noise or static. When I used a Zalman mic it sounded on par with that guy's Yeti, just as clear, just as good.

I'll just say it again, because it's just how it is: a Zalman ZM-Mic1 is objectively good enough for anyone's daily use. If you aren't making money off of your voice already, you have no reason to spend more money.

I got one of those and I absolutely fucking love it. I always get compliments on how good the sound is on that thing. I can go to the god damn kitchen to make food and still talk to people like if I were three centimeters from the microphone.

The only downside is that if I go to the bathroom, I need to mute it as my loud ass toilet makes crazy amount of sounds and I would be asked wether I "flushed the microphone in the toilet" since it picks that up really well even through the doors.

As for general background noise like the keyboard, mouse, refrigerator sounds, traffic sounds or similar background noise is filtered as far as I know. Couldn't be more happier with it though, I fucking hate headsets, and having something "just standing there" makes life so much easier.

*sigh* /v/ is being a bunch of plebs, as usual.

Use the right tool for the job. USB recording microphones are for making studio recordings and pick up absolutely everything. You want your speech heard, use a business-grade teleconferencing microphone. Picks up voice clear as day and digitally filters out background crap. Amazon has 'em but you can find a used ClearOne Chat 50/60/70 on Ebay for cheap if you look around.

Better angles of rejection, lower sensitivity for less reflections and ambient noise. One high pass later and it's crystal clear at 96khz.

Serious post. I used to use that mic.

Quality is good but it literally picked up a door opening on the other side of my house like it was right next to me. The noise of pressing (mechanical) keyboard keys was thunderous. Finally, it died about 15 months in and no PC will detect it unless i spent ten minutes unplugging and replugging. Bad mic overall.

I use this thing. it was $15.

I don't understand mics too well. I think i'm supposed to have a pre amp or something for a mic like this. I've really been meaning to look into that so I can get a clearer sound.

Currently I just plug it into the pink mic outlet on the back of my Pc, crank the mic volume settings up to max and that seems to work.

The blu yeti is a meme just like the snowball. You don't have the acoustics for it to work either.

Get a clip-on mic you dumb fuck http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ and attach it to your headphones. wow gg easy

The problem isn't that it picks up a ton of noise. The problem is that people turn up the gain ridiculously because they don't realize how quiet they're actually talking. Any professional* microphone requires you to speak at a reasonable volume to reduce background noise.
>>
>>322351607
And there's 4 modes on the Yeti.

>buy an expensive mic instead of a cheap USB headset for gaming
>realize that the only difference is people can hear my voice much more clearly but thats the only benefit, which isn't a big benefit at all
>realize that /v/ was trolling the whole time because everyone here is a NEET and uses headsets

what a waste of money that I just spent
>>
>>322351607
No, it picks up a lot of noise.

Any condenser microphone does, really. That's why they're studio quality microphones (not USB ones typically). They best thrive in treated rooms. That's why they're awful for places where you live close to traffic, live with other people/pets, their equipment in the room, or have lots of reflections (walls, glass, etc).

Even with the gain set low and angled and positioned a good distance away from my PC, I can still hear it despite how quiet it is. I can even pick up the low bass of traffic which is on the opposite side of ANOTHER house. Go ahead and do a recording, then really crank the volume. You'll hear all sorts of things in your recording.

The only way to record in a dirty environment is a dynamic microphone. Period.
>>
>>322351313
Easy money
>>
>>322351986
We're talking about using it for gaming. If you're doing a recording for a movie/podcast/whatever you can easily sample a room and use the noise removal tools of audacity or soundforge.

Your standards are too high for a low cost consumer mic.

http://www.auna-multimedia.co.uk/Microphones/Studio-Microphones/auna-MIC-900BG-USB-Condenser-Microphone-Black-Gold.html

I got this. If you use Skype it doesn't pick shit up. They really got a good noise canceling.

But god forbit you use it without some sort of noise canceling.

Picks up a fly on the other side of the room.
>>
>>322352196
Yes, you can do that and gut your recording's quality considerably.

Or you could have just spent the money on a dynamic microphone instead.

You also realize dynamics are the more cost effective solution in terms of audio, right? 200 bucks on a dynamic will sound much better than 300 dollars on a condenser.

>Your standards are too high
No, I'm simply informing people of the legitimate problems of having a condenser microphone while you're simply stating a bunch of bullshit.

Also, you're an idiot period if you spend 100+ dollars just to "use it for gaming" anyway.

That's because you're supposed to get good headphones and a cheap mic, not a good mic and cheap headphones.
>>
>>322338919
I went through two fo those Zalman mics in like two months before I decided to buy an actual standing mic.
>>
I got a blue snowball from newegg for $40

I used to be a big apple fan boy. I had a ton of apple products, so I'm using this for now.

Do you at least plan on upgrading?

I've been meaning to get a mic one of these days and Its between the CAD U37 or Blue Snowball. Which is better for the price? And how will I sound If I'm a couple of feet away?

I have money to throw away and am considering the AT2020. What else do I need to make it good? Layman terms BTW, I'm no fucking whizz when it comes to microphones or recording.

This. At first I thought this thread was some elaborate bait.
>>
I use a Blue Yeti.

I've recorded myself with it while pressing keys on my mechanical keyboard and playing output on my open back headphones, I've calibrated the gain and modes so that they're less audible when I play video games. It's still audible but my voice is much louder than the sound produced by my keyboard and headphones.

I use Sennheiser HD600 headphones, got the Yeti and those headphones for $400 on amazon as a deal. I don't use a pop filter. I'm not recording or streaming so I don't care.

I had a Sennheiser gaming headset before and the mic sound a bit muffled in comparison but had less background noise.
>>
>>322352894
most of them are lets players or streamers. it's a sad time for vidya.
>>
Stop me if i'm wrong, but doesn't voice chat get compressed to fuck in-game, so spending more than like $15 on a microphone is pointless?
>>
>>322338696
I bought one a while back because it was cheap. Mic broke after about half a year of normal use. Would constantly spit static unless I completely disabled microphone. It's shit. A shifty separate mic would've lasted me longer and I could've bought a nicer headphones than that shit.

Not the guy you are arguing with but there is a saying I like to live by, "You get what you pay for". I've gone through three of those Zalman mics breaking on me. Two just stopped working and the first stopped working after it fell of my desk with my headphones (which still work perfectly fine). So instead of almost spending a total of thirty bucks on Zalmans in six months I finally said fuck it and got a blue yeti on sale and have been satisfied with it for over a year now.
>>
>>322341729
A guy I watch on youtube uses that mic and he sounds fine. He cleans it up in post though.

How does the Blue Yeti look cool?

It's the mic literally everyone uses because it's good value for the money and goes on sale all the time.

it is very lightweight and easy to pick up and move.

same, although I managed to find those zalaman mics for like 3$ CAD too

decent quality but break easily cause cheap wire. Got a blue snowball now, works great, looks great.

I still have my Sony MDR-V6's after four years, but that zalman mic is not too good
I bought a cheap chinese stand-up condenser and it has better sound quality from 2 feet away than that zalman did from right in front of my face.

Plus, the zalman mic cord is like ten feet, so I had to bundle it really shittily before attaching it

>Better angles of rejection, lower sensitivity for less reflections and ambient noise. One high pass later and it's crystal clear at 96khz.

Plebs going to pleb.

Digital echo reduction and ambient noise cancellation >>>> lower sensitivity. And the high pass filter is built in as well.
>>
>>322337840
I'm using Strix DSP, best Background Noise cancellation out there. I can watch TV that's right next to me and speak with my buddies, they don't hear the TV at all.

Only downside is that the god damn "sound station" resets randomly in-game and cuts the sound. ASUS firmware at it's best.

Know what's easier than gutting signals in real time? Not having to gut them at all in the first place.

Any sound engineer would agree that most real time solutions aren't great outside of studio grade channel strips with preamps. But that's an entirely different ball game than what your shitty product offers.

Dynamic still wins.
