They were never goof in the first place. The only reason people paid any attention to them is because they had good graphics for their time, which by today's standards are horribly dated.
The gameplay was generic arcade shoot everything in sight riddled with artificial difficulty and god awful controls to milk naive kids of their pocket change.
Only fedoras think this series was ever good.

Hey now, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are not anywhere near as good as what came before, but it's not even remotely as bad as Team17.

Make new game from scratch with original assets.
Just make a basic high quality run and gun game with a few essential vehicles. No gimmick vehicle segments. No autoscrollers. Just good level and boss design.
Maybe actually try to finally outdo MS1's presentation and attention to detail, or MS3's animation.
