Whenever I get nostaligic with my mates everyone always talks about N64 or the game cube. Th worst are the hipsters who pretend like the NES was the best console ever.

SO MANY GOOD GAMES!

Megaman x series, Kirby All stars, etc

Fucking loved that console.

I think I still have a couple of them in my basement somewhere.

ps1 for me, but I'm not mad at your opinion. I had a snes and a genesis as a kid so I was neutral in the console wars. These days I can only play rpgs and platformers on snes. My ps1 diet is mainly jrpgs too, but I prefer those in psx library over the snes titles and that's why psx is better to me. I still adore those on the snes and genesis

The SNES was just a rehashes NES.

The NES is the console that made video games a medium, an artform, a state of higher being.

You misunderstand - The NES laid the foundation for every genre to come. Every game being made today uses the formula set by the NES. Platformer? Copy Mario. RPG? Copy DQ. Adventure? Copy Zelda. Exploration? Copy Metroid. Horror games, text adventures, even 2deep4u all existed here in their most basic state of raw gameplay.

Vidya began and ended with the NES.

PS1. SNES is a close second. Loved its vibrant games, but sometimes I feel the NES was more fun, even if it had more shit games than the SNES too. PS2 may have sold more, but I think it only did so well because of the reputation of the PS1.

As a yuropoor I do have to wonder about games where you're told which button to press by colors alone. There were a few, like the crystals in DKC3

>actually needing visual aids for your controller

Most computer keyboards are uniformly colored, and anyone competent can type without looking at it.

If you can't even manage four buttons, something's wrong.

>implying durability matters that much for a home console
If you live in a trailer park where shit gets tossed around, maybe you could do with durability. Most normal people leave their consoles near the TV and don't move it around. And even if it's that important to you, it's not like the American SNES was brittle.
>>
>>322333110
The American SNES is covered in asscracks where dirt gets in. A clean European SNES rejects all filth.
>>
>>322331539
Then what about games like Pitfall! or Adventure?

I generally don't make a habit of playing with my SNES outdoors.

These are unrefined raw material, as in where the concept was born. While not devoid of praise, it took until the NES for people to figure out how to make them work.

Are you saying those games didn't function? They functioned well, and anyways the same could be said of NES games that they were still unrefined and that 2D games didn't get all their edges smoothed out until the 16-bit era.
>>
>>322333557

I only started one fistfight in my life, and it was a snesfag who said his favorite track was the final boss from Yoshi's Island, which is just a low-rent genesis knock-off. This immediately after complaining about the bwang.

I like the snes more as well, but claiming anyone who likes the nes more is a hipster is just retardation.
>>
>>322333654
Yes, they did not function as intended. Adventure was practically unplayable without outside support in the form of a manual, which renders the immersion (RPGs) and puzzle-solving (adventure) moot.

Pitfall lacked the basic structure necessary to establish platforming, namely that you cannot change elevation. A straight line is not a platfomer, it's a walker. The obstacles were limited in number, usually only requiring timing and the press of a button while the likes of Mario used building blocks to craft all sorts of challenges that required both thinking and finger dexterity, the Lost Levels being the pinnacle of this.

The SNES had to compete against the Mega Drive's 10-year outdated soundchip, fewer audio channels, smeller storage capacity, worse playback and inferior output system by also making better music.

>Adventure was practically unplayable without outside support in the form of a manual, which renders the immersion (RPGs) and puzzle-solving (adventure) moot.
And a lot of people have problems with Zelda without the map and manual included with the game, and it is often recommended to look up the map when you don't have it because it was included for a reason.

>Pitfall lacked the basic structure necessary to establish platforming, namely that you cannot change elevation.
The basic structure for platforming is jumping and timing your jumps. Elevation has nothing to do with it. While elevation makes platforming more interesting it doesn't mean the lack of elevation doesn't mean it isn't a complete platforming with timing on getting on vines, when to jump on alligator heads, or to leap over scorpions.

It would be like saying anything before Doom wasn't a basic structured FPS due to them not having elevation changes and irregular rooms. What you are looking at is level design, not core mechanics.

Though by that logic, Donkey Kong was a typical platformer. Hell, any 2600 game that had you jump over something was a platformer. And probably a shooter too.

Jut because something carries traits of a genre doesn't necessarily make it part of that genre. Pitfall when judged next to even the first SMB would not be considered part of the platforming genre for above mentioned reasons.
>>
>>322334698
>Genesis "anything" except horrible grating noises sounding even remotely passable

There are more drum samples in this one song than the entire genesis library.

SNES shouldn't try to mimic orchestral sounds, it all sounds bad.

>>
>>322334996
See, I'm gonna ask you to stop trying to bait me, because sir, it simply will not work.

Donkey Kong. Explain why it's bad. It even came out for your precious NES.
>>
>>322334806
Pitfall! was completely centered around platforming with a defined start and an ending. All you could do was move and jump.

If Pitfall! isn't a platformer, then what is it?
>>
The Mega Drive and PC Engine were better. Much better.
>>
>>322335152
If Asteroids wasn't a Space Sim, then what is?
>>
>>322335131
It's a timewaster designed for 5 minutes brainless gameplay of jumping over the same barrel, jumping over the same gap and avoiding the same fire every time. To compare it to the likes of SMB is laughable.
>>
>>322335414
If it was so brainless than why did so many people have trouble getting the Rare coin in Donkey Kong 64 when they just had to beat a few levels of the original Donkey Kong?
>>
>>322335262
Why can't it be with its momentum based game mechanics they were trying to simulate guiding a craft in space? Doesn't mean it can't be a space sim shooter as well like other sci-fi space sim shooters we do have.
>>
>>322335508
Because it's hard?

>>322335571
This line of thinking leading down to the notion that the first game ever made was the Elevator Panel because you press buttons, and every game has been ripping it off ever since.

The common denominator became pronounced in the NES games, and every game since has been the NES game with a coat of paint and more content.
>>
>>322335414
What about the countless shitty arcade ports for the NES? Surely you can't defend the objectively inferior versions over their coin-op counterparts?
>>
>>322335756
I thought that was your job? Porting games runs opposite to the reason I love the NES, unbridled creativity and innovation.

Some games were arguably better though, like Gradius 2.
>>
>>322333768
The PSG at 0:49.

Really nice touch.
>>
>>322335850
Why do you think nes developers were trying to ape the arcade experience if arcade games weren't superior? Were they just out of ideas?
