Why do people keep saying that #FE was a "risk"? Because instead of making something that makes sense, they went full retard with idols? Idols are not risky, they're huge in Japan. If you ignore the fact that they pissed off a bunch of fans for no reason, there's nothing really risky about the game's actual content. The bizarre premise is the most "risky" thing about it, it never goes anywhere with it. It's the JRPG equivalent of Hatred.
What would be risky is if they actually went somewhere interesting with the story. Maybe get a little gritty, show the dark side of idol culture, Satoshi Kon-esque. But they didn't do that. The gameplay isn't even really that revolutionary or controversial.
