I don't get what's /v/ love for MGS3. That game had no story, it was just a recycled Bond plot. Big Boss turned into a less charismatic and shallow Solid Snake clone. The Boss was a literal retard that literally fucked up the world because of her retardness. Unmemorable and irrelevant codec conversations you can skip and won't miss anything of value.
The camouflage, stamina and food management improvements don't make it up for all the mistakes that game had.

I agree 2 had the best og metal gear stealth gameplay. Perfected from mg to mg2 to mgs1 and finally at mgs2. mgs3, 4, and the rest all felt like more unique experiences and while not really bad they were not the tight stealth the series started with. It makes me sad how little of mgs2 you actually spend sneaking though. So much time is spent chasing bombs or platforming off of falling pipes or doing other weird dumb shit instead of sneaking. and the rooms are tiny themselves only taking a second or two to get thru each for the most part. the game really shines in the vr missions though and i thank goodness there are so many of those. when soliton radar died the old stealth died with it unfortunately.

MGS4 has great gameplay, but it was bogged down by too much story and talking. I personally didn't mind the cutscenes all that much, but the loading times sucked from chapter to chapter and there simply wasn't enough gameplay period.
MGSV also has great gameplay, but has the opposite issue of being directionless. It's literally like the Bethesda games that have come out over the years, saturated with shit to do with little to no impact on the goal at large, wherein the main story is rather short, irrelevant, uninspired, etc. Capturing people to feed your base is fine and all but 300-400 guys later you're only seeing marginal increases to effectiveness of the various teams, R&D being especially useless in this game. There's the fulton upgrade and the sneaking suit and all that basically required shit if you're to beat some of the missions but otherwise it's literally the same ~12 guns/gadgets with marginal increases to damage, accuracy, maybe a scope or a UBGL. Fucking Fallout 4's weapon customization did more to aid the feeling of progression than the R&D team in MGSV. Not to mention the worthlessness of vehicles, the waiting times in R&D and outer ops, the lack of any flow whatsoever in the main missions that were 5 miles apart and lasted about 37 seconds, among various other inconsistencies, issues, and flat out poor choices (ie. The Skulls).
Oh, and the older MGS games handled like fucking bathtubs at times, but at least you never got stuck in the fucking terrain or trying to climb a slight incline. Why? Because the games had a focus, unlike the shit they plopped out in September.
tl;dr - MGSV is to MGS1/2/3 as Fallout 3/NV/4 is to Fallout 1. Take it for what you will.

But holy shit, the final boss fight with The Boss is insanely cool. Sniping at her while hiding in the white flower field, shooting each other with sub-machine guns, and those moments when she would rush you to take you on, one on one in CQC as Snake Eater played in the background was glorious.
