This seems like an alright build, but I feel like I'm wasting money, is the 980 really worth $200 more than the 970?

for 1080p the 970 does excellent in most games and it's ~200 cheaper. Also, like that other anon said, $150 for a case is a lot, especially considering you can get $60 cases that do their job just fine.
It's really up to you, though. Do you have anything better to spend the ~$300 you would save by switching to a 970 and a cheaper case? If not then just go with your build

Bullshit, I'm running 1440p and having no issues. Odds are good if you're having problems its FO4's fault, not the cards. 970 is far better value than a 980, you're getting almost nothing for 200 bucks extra.
