I quit because of tablet players, plain and simple. I used to be getting quite good at the game, getting perfects or missing only 1-3 notes on the 5 star songs I was playing.
Then my friend picked up the game and we had some fun playing while I was teaching him and shit.
Then he bought a tablet and was able to match my score and even beat me on occasion, despite him playing maybe 1/week and me playing every single day.

I played standard to 16k rank, got very frustrated with slow progress and moved on to osu!mania 4k
I played that for about a year till 1200 in rank, now I've been playing 7K for about 6 months and I'm back at 1200 rank
Mania is a shitload more fun that standard though it takes a lot longer to get properly into.
I'm guessing I'll move onto LR2 at some point.

In mania? It's all about learning to read patterns and developing finger independency. Eventually you won't need to think about playing simple patterns or hitting individual notes, it'll be more about consentrating to read dense patterns and finger speed.
You just got to play a lot to improve, especially speed/stamina takes months to improve when you've been playing for a while.
