Because the good devs all left, got fired, or died. Why does any system change? The quality of it's design or components change. In this case all the studios we've known and loved are losing the people who made the memes we really enjoy... and are being replaced by memes we like less. I think that's it.

It was, no doubt, the worst writing in a Blizzard's game. The Protoss characters were plain dull and boring, and the campaign didn't have enough new mechanics to compensate for that.
Campaign writing 3/10 Mediocre at best
Campaign mechanics 5/10 Ship abilities were kind of interesting and fun, sometimes.

That didn't change Chris Metzen's writing.
He just went off the deep end after Warcraft 3, it really kickstarted when The Burning Crusade came out and he started assassinating major lore characters.(But does that mean it started with Naxxramas?)
