I personally had plenty of fun with Q4, gore scene mortified smaller me though.
Played the ids in order of Q2 - Q3 - Q1 - Q4 - D1 - D2 - D3.
Found D3 extremely disappointing after Q4 and D1, but at least Last Man Standing made it hella fun stupid multiplayer. Couldn't make myself play halfway through D3 solo, awful. I'm sure it at least had the tech at the time.

They were generic linear corridor FPS games with a touch of horror. The actual gunplay is rather terrible in Doom 3 but slightly improved for Quake 4.
The problem was they had a purely technical design accomplished by Carmack and without Romero there to back that up with his emphasis on gameplay the game was extremely stale and there wasn't a whole lot Raven could do to improve upon it.
Id just continued its spiral of mediocrity was Rage which was actually a technical disaster because megatextures were a complete writeoff. Doom 4 is looking horrible so far. I don't know if any of the original ID team is even left.

Doom 2 stops being good after 8 or 9 levels, right when you're subjected to The Pit. Doom 1, outside of a few levels like Mt. Erebus, is consistently great or better. Doom 1 never even remotely came close to 2's low points.

Quake 4 is not a bad game, it's a bit like Quake 2 but Quake is the best in the series.
For me Doom 3 was just a bad FPS and a mediocre horror game. The atmosphere was ok but the gameplay felt wrong. Like in oldschool console survival games where you were scared not because of the monsters but because your character could not move or aim for shit.
