As someone who never played Half Life, should I buy Half Life 1 or just get Black Mesa? Also since I already own Half Life 2, could I just get the mod version of Black Mesa instead of buying the standalone?

Just get black mesa. The original game is not only outdated but the final part which isn't in black mesa is a complete boredom. So you're not missing much.

The developers are being lazy as fuck and STILL haven't released the final part of the remake yet. The AI is also inferior in every way.

get half-life 1 if you want the experience of a shooter that's fun for the same reason old school shooters were fun
get black mesa if you want an aesthetic experience in the world of half-life and you can put up with a wobbly difficulty curve

Original and black Mesa feel like different games. Play original first then black Mesa if you like it.
Play the original first and disable the fucking disgusting "HD" textures and models. Black Mesa is worth playing after.
Black Mesa is actually more frustrating than Half-Life 1. Some of the platforming that worked for Half-Life 1 just feels horrible in Black Mesa.
Also the retards decided it was a good idea to set the MP5 back to 30 rounds to make it more realistic and then added more troops in so you're constantly reloading.
