He and Chet were the first people to call out the games industry for being FUCKING TERRIBLE and just churning out terrible games. Fuck, they had one of the first sites to even probably use the blog+pictures format first, years before it caught on.
They were absolutely based back in the day, that stuff is better than anything they did once Valve hoovered them up.

It's hard to realise now, but the internet used to be tiny, and they were the first ones loudly saying shit like: "Stop setting all your games in brown sewers", etc. We think games journalism is bad now, but back in the 90s it was LITERALLY 100% institutionalised as corrupt. The magazines existed to sell the games and that was it.

Not only is OMM hilarious, but Wolpaw's serious GameSpot reviews from the early 2000s are some of the best written game reviews I've ever read. Sober, informative, organized, well written reviews.

Aside from obviously being a great writer and really funny, I always thought the thing that really made the OMM crew stand out was just how they didn't take any shit at all. Even many of their silliest pieces are actually more "serious" than almost all games journalism ever had been up til then, in that they weren't going to just turn a blind eye to how terrible games were or how little sense they made.
