Only played 12 hours of the third game. It felt like it was trying too hard to be weird for the sake of being weird with its wacky cast and plot setup.
Were the other two like that at all, or were they more grounded in its fantasy?

It's directly related and is a prequel however you can play Shadow Hearts without playing Koudelka. It's done in a way that while they're related it can also work as a standalone.

If you think about it Yuri is fucked even more thanks to the good ending in 2.Yuri has to relive SH1 and 2 over and over again for all eternity. If alice lives he never meets Karin so he then wouldn't be born as she wouldn't have traveled back in time to be his mother. He either has to settle for nonexistence, a time loop or permanent amnesia

First one is atmospheric as fuck. Setting was really refreshing, MC is great, even Alice ended up being extremely likable.
Second completely dropped the ball in terms of mood. There's no spooky atmosphere of the first game there thanks to the stuff like space dogs in St. Petersburg, vampire wrestlers using frozen fish as a weapon and other goofy and tasteless shit. Third went even further and ended up being one of the worst fucking jrpgs i've seen on a platform.
1 and 2 are some of the best JRPGs ever made. 3 is best forgotten.

It is the only logical endings for yuri.Either he makes himself nonexistent by saving Alice in the SH good ending by going back in 2's good ending because his mom wont fall in love with Yuri and find out she is Yuri's mom thanks to Saki.
