Cloud doesn't believe he's Zack fair beyond that one bit in his flashback where he self inserts into his shoes to complete the mental gymnastics to convince himself that he was a SOLDIER 1st Class that knew Sephiroth and was at Nibelheim. Beyond that, Cloud's just doing his best edgy SOLDIER impersonation.
