http://shoryuken.com/2015/12/30/snk-playmore-executive-says-successful-steam-ports-helped-bring-them-back-to-game-development/

>While those of us in the fighting game community still look on the name SNK Playmore fondly thanks to their history of development in the genre, recent years have seen this venerable studio shift their focus to the manufacture of pachislot machines. Instead of bringing us legitimate Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown installments, they instead decided to use those properties for other purposes, losing a bit of goodwill in the process.

>Back in November, however, fans were given a glimmer of hope when SNK Playmore release an official statement describing their decision to move away from the pachislot business in favor of the traditional game development that put them on the map in the first place. The uncertainty of the market was cited as the main impetus, but a recent interview with the chief of their gaming division, Yutaka Noguchi, shines a light on some of the other factors behind the move.

>Speaking with Famitsu (and subsequently translated by MMCafe’s Professor), Noguchi said the success of PC ports like King of Fighters XIII Steam Edition helped push them back towards game development, not to mention the international recognition their various brands enjoy to this day. “Even as of now, we’re better known as a game company than a pachislot company. People still talk about us (as a game company) when we say our name,” Noguchi explained.

Basically PC gamers saved fighting games forever and a PC version of King of Fighters XIV is basically confirmed now.

Now we just need SVC3.

no that was street fighter 4

which is hilarious because they both killed and revived the genre
>>
>>322093560
It was more of "life support", if I may be frank, relative. It filled the same role that Mortal Kombat did up to 2008. Still, my point is that the SNK Steam ports didn'tsave fighting games, because Capcom already did that starting in 2008.
>>
>>322093405

>(to a lesser extent) Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

You mean the game that completely bombed and garnered massive ill will towards the entire genre due to lack of content, hilariously poor balance and an insultingly quick sequel?
>>
>>322093560
SnK fighters have no ground anywhere except south america and parts of asia

even then they just play 98
>>
>>322094035
He said Marvel 3, not Street Fighter X Tekken.

By the time SFxT came out mainstream audiences had already given up on new fighters in large part due to MvC3, SFxT just vindicated everyone who gave up.

let's be real here

how many people there are left that worked on the old KOF games?

their best bet is probably making beach volleyball games like DOA

Well yeah porting is cheap and simple with Steam. It's simply profitable, even more so in the long run. Pushing your shit in Steam is basically a no-brainer by now.
>>
>>322094397
While I disagree that MVC was responsible for killing the fighting game genre for a whole lot of people, I will agree that it is the poster child for the dangers of DLC.
>>
>>322094402

>how many people there are left that worked on the old KOF games?

That really doesn't matter when SNK went out of business on the old KoF games.

If a fighting game isn't Street Fighter they may as well just give up, unless it's Tekken, then all they can do is roll with the decline as long as they can.

You're talking about fightcade/gppo/rollback netplay, and not steam, right? Rollback netcode saved numerous fighters likes Vampire Savior from obscurity.
>>
>>322095521
First of all, no it's not.

Second of all, SVC Chaos is even slower.
>>
>>322095761
SVC:C is the same speed as KOF, much faster than CVS.

You clearly know nothing of the utter travesty that was the DLC kerfuffle over the on disc shit in that trash.

Mortal Kombat did nothing but shit on the genre. Tekken and Soul Calibur kept it alive during the early 2000's. Mortal Kombat was always that retarded niece that got to tag along.

You need more than sales to keep a genre alive. CoD is producing sales aswell yet the FPS genre hasn't been this shit since its inception. Even then, MK isn't as popular as Tekken when you factor in arcade popularity.
>>
I'd rather have Darkstalkers 4.
>>
>>322096315
Namco games sold way better than MK9 and Tekken Tag 2 flipped it.

Tekken 6 taught casuals that they suck at Tekken by giving them access to online play, so they didn't buy Tekken Tag 2. Tekken's fanbase was mostly casuals until Tekken 6. Now it's just old tournament players from the Tekken 5 days. Nobody new is learning the game, and the scene is dying.
>>
>>322091530
UMVC3 for pc plz
>>
>>322096430
>when you factor in arcade popularity
You mean that thing that only exist in like 3 countries around the world and has been dying for years in others
>>
>>322096624
Yes, that thing. It still makes publishers a lot of money. Mortal Kombat doesn't deserve credit for shit. It was always that joke game you played for the gore. NetherRealm knows this aswell considering their inability to produce an online mode that is functional. High sales isn't the same as keeping a genre alive. What MK was keeping alive was that brain-dead section of the genre.
>>
>>322096604
Disney will never let anything be done with MVC ever again, it's completely dead
>>
>>322093354

second to match of the millenium

how long before fighting games are dead again like the early to mid 2000s?
>>
>>322097367
They were never dead though, only Capcomkids think so.
>>
>>322097518
>Capcomkids
You mean Street Fighter kids.
