They tested making "realistic" gun wounds in games and people fucking hated it ending with those games being flops.
Turns out it actually sucks having your character be limited by full realism. Its just not fun(the main point of games.) If you want a realistic gun wound experience go shoot yourself in the foot and hop around in agony.

You know what I'd love to see? an FPS with realistic damage and injuries. Not just "click to heal" shit, but actual "your arm is broken now" shit. Then after the battle is done everyone has to spend time and money healing up. You can switch characters at that point, but your local battle has an effect globally. Fight too poorly for too long and your side runs out of fresh meat so now you have to redeploy the wounded people with injuries.

The most important part gaming "success" is developing a large and passionate community. A game that alienates thousands "casuals" in favor of having 20 "pros" circejerking each other in the lobby is just a retarded idea from a business standpoint, and no developer wants to release a guaranteed flop. Likewise no players want to play a game with no other players, unless its a single player game of course.

If it makes sense, I'm fine with it. If I'm playing as an armored space warrior that tanks weapon fire like a motherfucker, I'd expect to be able to walk through a bit of fire without dropping dead.

Same with health regen. If you want a game with regen powers, at least give it a reason to have them. Some wannabe realistic warshooter with wolverine-soldiers though, that's just being lazy.

well, I'm not the dude you responded to, but I have a response. I hate regenerating health personally. I think it takes out almost all of the tension. I don't need a super realistic "bullet wound simulator" game, that sounds stupid as shit. But look at games like Stalker, Half Life, or EYE Divine Cybermancy. They kill you fairly quickly, have pretty good health systems, and do a good job of replicating a small amount of real world stress in a fictional medium. I don't know. It just always seems so stupid to me to immediately recover from bullet wounds. I also like the tension that comes from having to play smarter and better as your health goes down while waiting to find a healing item. That is a feeling no game with regenerating health has ever given me

Health kits force you to treat HP as a commodity but make you play almost assuredly more stealthy.
A lot of CUHRAYZEE games want to turn you into some kind of turbo-badass berserker and thus this is where the regenerating health became useful because you'd get your ass beat from a ton of sources ritually.

In a shooter/survival scenario, it makes sense to implement. Even if it triggers autism due to the less than 100 value in the HP readout or whatever.

yeah, actually, that is a really good fucking point. I haven't really looked at it like that. I guess it can be forgivable, but my big, big immersion killer is a lack of context for design choices, or else design choices that directly go against the rest of the tone of the game. For example, I don't mind if I have regenerating health if I'm a cyborg, or if I can jump a hundred feet or fall ten stories as long as it's presented in some way that is consistent with the rules of the game world. But in modern "realistic" shooters why on earth can you just regenerate like that? It takes any tension out of the game for me. I still think you can have a really fast paced and intense action game that has hit points, and it just makes it more fun, for me. Again, half life or eye. I think those are good examples. I don't take cover too too much, and I'm constantly moving and shooting a large amount of enemies, but I still have to think about what I'm doing.

For the sake of casualization, healthpacks and recording health changes take up time that could be used for more shooty.
You can still have HP accounting in less sneeki breeki games. In some non-shooters, the HP regeneration can be a miniscule gift for avoiding danger for lengths at a time (meaning you ought to use a healing source like a pack or a team medic).
There are so many variables like enemy damage and player abilities that change the argument around per case. All I know is I'm pissed off that Fallout 4 lacks per-limb stimpack usage and other changes that push complete linearization of health.

This reminds me a lot of the idea of losing everything on death in an MMO which has pretty much gone away. Or even losing experience. Or a notable amount of gold...Anything really.

In old games it made you much more cautious. You really wanted to not die, so you had to take less risks. Health potions were a resource, grouping with people combined your strengths so you'd both be less likely to die and challenge things you wouldn't. Now these games are treated like singleplayer steamrolls so you can't even die in the first place, but if you do it doesn't matter. Though it's terrible it's also the only way to keep the experience the same for people who can't find groups since the games are entirely back loaded.
