Pretty sure what determines whether you like Undertale is whether you like anime and JRPGs. It's heavily deconstructing and parodying of tropes from both.

For instance, the comic strip "Trenches"? The one that has Mike, Jerry, and Scott's names on each an every one? Written by the gay guy from Strip Search and drawn by the asian chick from the very same show. Started right around season two where everyone's personalities completely changed, the art shifted, etc.
Penny Arcade is the same thing. Go on their website on any given day, and 90% of what you see is going to be links to glorified Let's Plays of them and their hipster employees. They're not artists anymore. They've made the Inafune shift. They're a brand that they sell to their hyper creepy worshippers who wait in line at PAX Panels to tell them that Penny Arcade cured their ass cancer or whatever.
how can you not understand undertale, it's not that different from a sprite rpg, the whole friend stuff is an optional gimmic. It's like not understanding mario rpg just because you can do QTE in battles.
