I got squad and played like 2 rounds, it has a lot of promise. The problem is that even though it's got a lot of stuff going for it, it's really bare might as well go back to PRBF2 and wait for it to finish

Nah I don't think so. Infatry Combat is pretty great in Squad and blows Arma out of the fucking water both in terms of realism and fun.
Arma in general has so much more to offer than Squad will ever have. Just look at the weapon variety and modding capability of the game. It also has much better game modes because of the great and easy to access editor.

You have to spend an hour to make sure a trigger fires right or make AI move how you want to with vanilla Arma. Not to mention you have to learn some scripting just to do some stuff or totally rely on mods. Arma's great but it's editor always needed more streamlining to make mission making easier and dynamic.
