Given the OP was shitposting bait it's not surprising really that a lot of the responses are too is it? Most of us who loved playing UT99 in highschool/college when it first came out or UT2k4 later probably aren't going to even bother replying, so you're kind of self-selecting here. At least a few people probably genuinely hate the skill required however, they want something slower, preferably more random, and with more artificial "experience" stat based mechanics or "unique loadouts" or whatever to help even out the skill differences between them and those who are a lot better and willing to put in a lot more time.

I don't even disagree with people who want that either so long as they're honest about it. There's nothing wrong with games like that and they can a be a ton of fun too. It's irritating when they try to pretend it's the be-all end-all, but insecure fags who have to self-justify for some reason rather then just enjoying stuff for what it is shouldn't surprise you either.

While other tactical shootans have developed bigger maps and more features like lean, sprint, carry weight, simulated projectiles, better material penetration, better customization, classes, etc., CS is stuck in basically the same state as it was in 1.6. The only way it's moved forward in the last 15 years or so is in graphics.

Funny thing is I enjoy both ends of the spectrum. Superfast arena shooters like Quake and Tribes, and very slow paced tactical games like SWAT and Rainbow 6 series.

Grew up on UT99. Friends got me to play Cawadooty for a while, I completely shit on the other teams. I could carry a team of 6 on my own in TDM. My average K/D per match in CoD games was around 50/3.

But for some reason or another, they never made a new engine after they facelifted the first one. Then they slowly dwindled down until DF Xtreme 2 which sold abysmally and came out the same year as MW2. Then they finally decided it was time to make a new engine and started work on Angel Falls.

That's why X-COM, a similarly complex game (if you occlude DF's cutting edge AI), is much more mainstream. You don't need to put in months to get a nugget of satisfaction from it.

Sprites age better than models. 2.5D > 3D

DooM holds up because having billboarding sprites gives it retro cred. Early 3D games have spiny humanoids with flat pictures pasted on their vertices, which is horribly ugly to anybody not wearing nostalgia goggles. Maybe if it were totally rasterized polygons, like Apache or Carrier Command. Those two are 3D games that aged like DooM, wherein they don't look GREAT but they are simple enough that your imagination fills in the gaps.
