Despite being the lowest selling Nintendo handheld and handheld system sales in general being cannibalized by smartphones globally this seems like a very impressive feat.

The 2ds isn't as flimsy as the 3ds (no hinges breaking and such) and has the feel of actually holding a gameboy. It's actually the patrician choice, just got mine last week pham.
Overall handheld gaming has shrunk, but at least it isn't completely dead. I don't think handheld gaming will ever be relevant in the west again though.

The XL is if you want a bigger system/screen.
2DS was because parents were worried about kids using 3D and affecting eyesight+breaking hinges.
The new 3DS is just an overall redesign and came in regular and XL for more choice again. Whichever preference you take.

I think the problem with the 3DS is that the Gameboy and DS were pretty cheap systems. Even after the 3DS' first price cut its by far the most expensive handheld they've ever made.
I think if the 2DS was an option at launch(and they actually had the eShop day 1) they wouldn't have bungled the launch and let smartphones grab those players.

It had variety.
DS had variety, but most of it was either Nintendo stuff or shovelware merchandis3 meant to cash grab on IPs. Thankfully the mobile market took that burden off the new gen handhelds.
Looking in retrospect, DS had a ridiculously large amount of games, but almost all of them were the kind of crap you now see being sold for a 1$ in the Play/AppStore.
Meh, the only reason you would get a Nintendo handheld anyways was for Pokemon.
PSP hardware enabled better and fuller games. You had stuff like Tactics Ogre, P3P, And Disgaea, and you had stuff like Tekken, Burnout, God of War, Crisis Core, Peace Walker and emulation of every pre-PS2 era console.
